Loft Storage in Maze Hill

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make loft storage for homes in Maze Hill, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • Ready-made wardrobes too big for the stairs
  • Wasted space behind the knee walls
  • A dormer that isn’t being used

Loft storage for your home in Maze Hill

Loft storage in Maze Hill: what you get

A converted loft often has more storage space than it first seems. Our loft storage includes eaves cupboards, knee-wall drawers, wardrobes under sloping ceilings and dormer shelving, all made for the shape of the room. In Maze Hill, as everywhere we work, it begins with a visit to measure and plan. We make eaves cupboards from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are a loft room that still feels unfinished and ready-made wardrobes too big for the stairs.

Newer homes often have plain spaces left as they are: a recess beside the stairs, a gap by a window, an empty cupboard. Many homes around Maze Hill date from 2000 onwards, so spaces like that are worth a second look. The layout inside is planned to use the full depth.

A written quote follows the design visit. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you’re getting.

Practical tips

Most of what helps is simple. What we’d suggest:

  • Note how narrow the loft stairs are
  • Count the clothes you’ll need to hang
  • Find out what’s behind the eaves, from insulation to vents
  • Empty the eaves so we can see what’s behind

When you load the drawers and cupboards, put heavy things low. It helps the runners and keeps the storage working well. We size the shelves for what you said you’d keep there.

Check now and then that handles and hinges are tight. Tightening early stops a small looseness getting worse. If a door drops or a drawer catches, use our contact form and tell us.

Pull-out drawers

Drawers that pull out make the eaves easy to use. You see everything at once. We plan them around any access the eaves need.

Spray-painted finish

A spray-painted finish is smooth and even. It is done in our workshop before fitting. You choose the colour.

How we price loft storage

What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. The main factors are:

  • The number of doors and drawers
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • The internal fittings
  • Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size comes first. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Helping us understand the room

To give us a picture of the room, it is useful to include:

  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth

The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and talk through the design with you. Afterwards, we send a written quote. To arrange the visit, message us from the contact page.

Fitting day, step by step

The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. Newer homes often have stud walls, so on fitting day heavy pieces go into the studs or stand on the floor. Floors are covered while we work, and dust is kept to a minimum.

  1. You let us know about the loft room.
  2. We come to measure and discuss the design and finish.
  3. A quote in writing follows.
  4. The storage is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, and sprayed there if you chose a spray finish.
  5. The storage is fitted and scribed to the slopes, and any hand painting is done on site.
  6. Go easy on new paintwork while it cures; hand-painted surfaces are easy to touch up later.

Before fitting day

  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know

Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. About 44% of homes in the area around Maze Hill were built since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. In a newer house with a converted loft, the space under the slopes can be used; we build once the loft is converted or boarded.

If your home is one of the older houses near Christ Church, eaves cupboards in a converted loft are scribed to slopes that are rarely even. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Royal Observatory, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. Could you do it yourself?

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.

Questions from Maze Hill

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

I live near Maze Hill station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Greenwich and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps, which helps avoid condensation and mould. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. We are carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design.

How is loft storage priced?

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Drawers in the knee wall typically involve more work than simple cupboards, and the finish matters too. We set it all out in a quote in writing.
