Loft storage for your home in New Charlton

Why people ask for loft storage in New Charlton

Standard wardrobes do not fit under a sloping ceiling. Bespoke wardrobes follow the slope. It is often the main reason people get in touch about a loft bedroom.

A few of the things people ask us to solve are these:

  • A boarded loft with no proper shelving
  • Ready-made wardrobes too big for the stairs
  • A new loft conversion that needs storage
  • A loft room that doubles as an office or guest room

If your children go to Thorntree Primary School or a school nearby, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit.

What to check before you book

  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • Whether you’ll get a written quote, not just a figure
  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from

How we make loft storage for New Charlton

A loft room can hold a great deal of storage, if the low spaces are used well. We design and make eaves cupboards, drawers in the knee walls, wardrobes under the slopes and shelves in dormers, all made for the shape of the room. For a home in New Charlton, it starts with a design visit to measure and talk it through. Typical reasons to get in touch are an empty dormer that could hold shelves and standard furniture that won’t go up the loft stairs; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

In a part of London with mixed housing, like much of the city, floors, walls and ceilings vary from one home to the next. Each piece is scribed to the wall and set level, whatever the room is like. You choose the paint colour, and whether it is spray-painted or hand-painted.

After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you are getting.

How we price loft storage

Prices vary from room to room, and it comes down to:

  • How square the room is
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Before the design visit

These details help when you get in touch:

  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth

You don’t need exact measurements to get started. We measure everything properly at the design visit. To arrange it, drop us a line using the contact form and let us know about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

Fitted storage in New Charlton

About 34% of the homes in the streets around New Charlton went up before 1919, and about 29% between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. New Charlton is partly covered by a conservation area, according to Historic England’s records. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings. If you’re unsure, check with the council before work starts. A quarter or more of the homes in the neighbourhood around New Charlton (about 29%) were built between 1945 and 1972, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Where a post-war house has had its loft converted, the eaves and slopes can take fitted storage.

Queen's House, about 1.8 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, a dormer in a converted loft can hold shelves or a small desk.

From workshop to your room

At the end, we tidy up and lift the floor protection. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together. The time the fitting takes depends on the length of the eaves and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are assembled, scribed to the walls and levelled. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether brick, block, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You tell us about the loft room.
  2. We come to measure and discuss the design and finish.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The storage is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, and sprayed there if you chose a spray finish.
  5. We fit it in the loft and check each door and drawer with you.
  6. Go easy on new paintwork while it cures; hand-painted surfaces are easy to touch up later.

Flats, leases and landlords

If the property is let, we will need access agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you.

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, after measuring the route during the design visit.

Questions we are often asked

How do you fit loft storage in a flat in New Charlton?

At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. Eaves cupboards are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in New Charlton?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.

What materials do you use for loft storage?

The storage is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood gives strength to the carcasses and drawers, and MDF takes paint well for the doors and panels. The finish is spray-painted or hand-painted.

Do I get to choose the colour?

The choice is yours. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.

How is the furniture painted?

You can choose between two finishes: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and go through the design with you. We’ll also ask about access and parking, and afterwards we send a written quote.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is typically a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.
