TV and media units in Clare Market
Speakers need space to be heard properly. A soundbar typically sits just below the TV, and larger speakers can go on open shelves either side. Closing speakers in a cupboard muffles them. We make TV and media units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the usual reasons to get in touch are set-top boxes stacked on a stand and alcoves either side of the chimney breast going to waste.
Victorian and Edwardian houses were built with solid brick outside walls, and internal walls may be brick or lath and plaster. Since a large share of the homes around Clare Market date from before 1919, we check which you have before deciding how TV and media units are fixed. Lath and plaster needs a lighter touch and the right fixings, especially behind loaded shelves.
A written quote follows the design visit. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you’re getting.

How we price TV and media units
Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. This is what makes the difference:
- Parking near your home
- Spray painting or hand painting
- The overall size of the piece
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.
Before the design visit
A little information at the start saves time later. Where you can, include:
- A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
- Any ideas or images you’ve saved
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
If you know what you want, say so; if you do not, that is fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, use our contact form.
How it’s made
Birch plywood
Long shelves under a screen need to stay straight. Birch plywood helps.
Moisture-resistant MDF
MDF in a moisture-resistant grade is stable and paints evenly, so we use it for panels, doors and the faces you see.
Fitting day, step by step
In older rooms, the furniture usually has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it looks as though it was always there. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In houses converted into flats, the route in may include a shared hall and stairs, so neighbours may appreciate a note before fitting day. The sections are sized for the narrowest point on the route. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.
- You describe the TV wall and your equipment.
- We come to measure and talk through screen height, speakers and cables, with ventilation for boxes and amplifiers.
- A written quote follows. If anything in it is unclear, ask us.
- We then make the unit in our workshop.
- We bring it to your home and fit it in place.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
- Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
How to get a quote
The quote is built from the design visit. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and talk through the design with you. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing for you to look over. To book one, fill in our short enquiry form.
Advice
Flats, conversions and leaseholders
If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so let us know about it at the measuring visit.
Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the measuring visit.
Questions we are often asked
My home in Clare Market is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?
At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. TV and media units are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.
My home in Clare Market is a period house with walls that are not straight. Is that a problem?
Yes, that is normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.
What if the wall is cold or damp?
It can be done with some care: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.
Is there room for a soundbar?
Speakers work best in open spaces rather than behind doors. A soundbar can sit on a shelf below the screen. Tell us the speaker sizes when we visit.
How is the price worked out?
Size, doors and drawers, what goes inside and the finish all affect it. The price comes in a written quote after the design visit.
Who moves the sockets for a built-in TV wall?
Your electrician does that. Ideally it’s done before fitting and we design the cable routes around the sockets.

Built-in living-room furniture in Clare Market
Homes built before 1919 make up about 48% of the housing in the area around Clare Market, with about 22% built since 2000, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The National Heritage List has 716 entries within half a mile of the centre of Clare Market. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. Controlled parking zones cover much of inner London, and each borough runs its own. So a van fitting furniture in Clare Market typically needs a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay arranged through the council. Parking is worth mentioning during the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.
If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of St Mary Le Strand, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. For families living near St Clement Danes CofE Primary School, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room. If you live in a period home close to Enon Chapel, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at.

What’s near Clare Market
The streets we cover here include those near Mercers' School, Ye Old White Horse pub and LSE Shaw Library and the streets around them. Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Most stands have a cable hole or two at the back, but cables typically still show somewhere. A built-in unit has routes planned through it, with access panels for changes later. Chimney breasts in older houses stand out by different amounts, so the recesses either side are rarely the same, which means a matching pair of ready-made units seldom fits both. Each side can be made to its own size.
Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size comes first. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.
