Loft storage in Colindale, Barnet

Loft storage for your home in Colindale: eaves cupboards, drawers and wardrobes in converted lofts. We visit to measure and discuss the design, make the furniture in our workshop and fit it.

  • A sloping ceiling with no room for a wardrobe
  • A boarded loft that is hard to keep organised
  • Furniture that cannot get up to the loft

Before and after fitting day

Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it’s worth looking after. A few pointers help:

  • Think about matching the woodwork or the walls
  • Find out what’s behind the eaves, from insulation to vents
  • Count the clothes you’ll need to hang
  • Check the route up to the loft

Wiping the fronts with a soft, damp cloth is usually all they need. Avoid scourers and harsh cleaners. The edges around handles are touched most.

Leave room for air to move behind the storage. Squashed insulation works less well. If you notice damp or condensation behind the eaves, ask whoever converted the loft.

Each eaves cupboard is built in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood gives the carcasses and drawers their strength, and MDF gives the doors and panels a smooth surface for paint. Once painted, by spray or by hand, it’s carried up and fitted in your home in Colindale. If you’re living with clothes with nowhere to go in a loft bedroom and space under the eaves going to waste, that’s what eaves cupboards are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

A large number of homes around Colindale date from 2000 onwards, and in London many homes of that age are flats in newer developments. Where a boiler or cylinder sits in a cupboard, the design keeps the clearances its maker sets out. Cupboards can be shallow where space is tight.

The quote comes in writing, so there is time to read it properly and share it with anyone else involved. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Fitted storage in Colindale

In the neighbourhood around Colindale, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 50%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 24%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The National Heritage List records 8 entries within half a mile of the centre of Colindale. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. About 50% of homes around Colindale were built since 2000, well above the figure for Barnet as a whole, about 19%, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Newer homes often have stud walls and compact rooms, so fixings and sizes are planned with that in mind.

For a family home near Colindale Primary School, eaves cupboards can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home. For a flat near Hendon station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

Colindale is within the London Borough of Barnet, about 3 miles east of Finchley. Anywhere in Colindale, the process is the same: a design visit, a written quote, furniture made at our workshop and fitting in your home. Colindale is one of the places in Barnet where we make loft storage.

Every home in NW9, NW4 and HA8 is within our area for loft storage. You will find streets here like Cecil Road, Booth Road and Ajax Avenue, and we cover homes on all of them for loft storage. The A5150 runs close to Colindale, so if your home is on a main road, mention it when you get in touch. If you’re just outside Colindale, we also cover West Hendon (1 mile south), The Hyde (1 mile south), The Burroughs (1 mile east), Hendon (1 mile south-east) and Kingsbury (1 mile south-west). Elsewhere in Barnet, we also cover Finchley (3 miles east), Barnet (5 miles north-east), East Finchley (3 miles east), Whetstone (4 miles north-east), Edgware (2 miles north-west) and Friern Barnet (4 miles east).

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.

Questions we are often asked

Is parking a problem for fitting in Colindale?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.

Can you make loft storage for a home in Colindale?

Yes, Colindale is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Barnet and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, followed by a quote.

Will eaves storage block the ventilation?

Not when it’s planned well. At the design visit we check what’s there and leave the space it needs. Insulation and ventilation work itself is not ours.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

It needs a little planning: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. Damp treatment isn’t something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Usually not. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. Listed buildings can require listed building consent for works that affect their character, so ask the council’s conservation officer.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch, and we will see what we can do.

From workshop to your room

In older rooms, the furniture normally has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it looks as though it was always there. The time the fitting takes depends on the shape of the room and the number of cupboards and drawers, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Before fixing into a stud wall, we check for pipes and cables, and heavy pieces are fixed into the studs or stand on the floor. Other trades handle any new sockets or plumbing, ideally before fitting day.

  1. You get in touch with a few details about the loft room, whether it’s a converted room or a boarded space.
  2. We visit to measure and look at what’s behind the knee walls, and talk through the design with you.
  3. Your quote sets out the design, the materials and the finish.
  4. We make the cupboards and drawers in our workshop, cut to the slope.
  5. We fit it in your home and leave it ready to use.

How to prepare

  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Tell us about parking near your home
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall

Arranging a design visit

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, especially with rough sizes. To send them over, drop us a line using the contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.

Related advice

Is it time for loft storage?

A sloping ceiling makes a standard wardrobe impossible. A wardrobe made for the slope uses the full height. It’s a common need in a loft bedroom.

Here are some of the needs we are asked about most:

  • Standard furniture that won’t go up the loft stairs
  • A loft room that still feels unfinished
  • Space under the eaves going to waste
  • A boarded loft with no proper shelving

If you live in a period home close to St Matthias the Apostle church, the low eaves and slopes of a converted loft are worth using.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, after measuring the route at the measuring visit.

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways not just the room, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.
