The Burroughs Loft Storage
Eaves cupboards, drawers and wardrobes in converted lofts, designed for your room in The Burroughs. We measure, design and quote first, then make it in our workshop and fit it.
- Wasted space behind the knee walls
- An empty dormer that could hold shelves
- A loft room that still feels unfinished
Need loft storage in The Burroughs?
What we don’t do
As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. It helps to know these before you plan the job:
- Insulation or ventilation work behind the eaves
- Electrical work in the loft
- Loft conversions, which we do not carry out
If in doubt, you can send us a few details through our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How it works.
Materials and parts
- Sloped wardrobe tops
- Spray-painted finish
- Moisture-resistant MDF
- Birch plywood
- Hand-painted finish
- Eaves doors and drawers
Loft storage for homes in The Burroughs
We make each eaves cupboard in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which suits drawer boxes and carcasses, while MDF takes paint well for the doors and panels. Once painted, by spray or by hand, it’s carried up and fitted in your home in The Burroughs. We make eaves cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about a boarded loft with no proper shelving and a converted loft with no fitted furniture.
A good part of the housing around The Burroughs is interwar, semi-detached or detached. If yours is a 1920s or 1930s house, the bay window at the front, the space under the stairs and the box room are the usual places to gain storage. Any meters or fuse board under the stairs stay accessible, and the storage is planned around them.
A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It sets out the eaves cupboard designed for your room, its materials and its finish, and it is what the workshop builds to.

Questions from The Burroughs
Does a conservation area in or near The Burroughs affect fitted furniture?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in The Burroughs?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.
Can you build a wardrobe under a sloping ceiling?
Yes. A wardrobe made for the slope fits where a standard one cannot. The tall end takes hanging space, and the low end can hold shelves or drawers. It is scribed to the slope and walls.
Do you work on Saturdays?
Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Let us know when you first get in touch.
Can you convert my loft as well?
No. We do not carry out loft conversions. Our part is the storage once the loft is a finished room, from eaves cupboards to wardrobes under the slopes.
Will cupboards in the eaves stop air moving?
A good design avoids that. At the design visit we check what’s there and leave the space it needs. Insulation and ventilation work itself is not ours.
What affects the price in The Burroughs
The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. That depends on:
- How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
- The width and height of the space
- Parking near your home
- The finish: spray painted or hand painted
Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.
Helping us understand the room
These details help when you get in touch:
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
- Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
- Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
- The type of home and how the room is reached
To get a quote for loft storage in The Burroughs, fill in our short enquiry form. Tell us which room it is and roughly what you have in mind. Next comes a design visit, followed by a written quote.
Practical tips
Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after. A few things help it stay looking good:
- Count the clothes you will need to hang
- Think about what will go in each cupboard or drawer
- Consider drawers for the deep, low spaces
- Look at the insulation and any vents behind the knee wall
A hand-painted finish is easy to touch up if it gets marked. Keep a note of the colour for later. Should you have a question about the storage, message us from the contact page and we’ll help.
Sharp edges and heavy boxes can chip a painted edge. Store tools in a box, not loose against the doors. Minor chips can be touched up with the matching colour.
Fitted storage in The Burroughs
About 45% of the homes in the neighbourhood around The Burroughs went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 20% before 1919, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That matters for eaves cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of The Burroughs include Church Farmhouse Museum (Grade II*), under half a mile north, and Parish Church of St Mary (Grade II*), less than half a mile north. If your own home is listed, changes inside that alter its character, like fixing into or removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. On TfL’s red routes, the rules on stopping and loading are strict. If your home in The Burroughs is on or near a main road, tell us at the measuring visit. We will plan where the van can stop.
For a flat near Hendon station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. If you live near Hendon Park, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and eaves cupboards can give those things a place.
The Burroughs is part of the London Borough of Barnet, about 2 miles east of Finchley. From period terraces to newer flats in The Burroughs, the furniture is designed around the room as we find it. Why people ask for loft storage in The Burroughs
Some people have a boarded loft and want proper shelving. Shelves and cupboards keep things off the floor and easy to find. It suits seasonal things and boxes.
Common reasons to get in touch include:
- A sloping ceiling with no room for a wardrobe
- A loft room that doubles as an office or guest room
- A new loft conversion that needs storage
- Nowhere to store bags and boxes
For an older house near St Mary's Church, the knee walls of a converted loft can take drawers as well as cupboards.
Before you hire any carpenter
- Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
- Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
- Is it spray painted or hand painted?
- Will the doors close with even gaps?

How fitting day works
Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, which keeps the lines straight. After that, it’s fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that is solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so any section going up there is sized for them. Elsewhere in the house, the route is typically more generous. Each section is assembled and fixed in the room.
- You tell us about your converted or boarded loft.
- We measure the eaves, the slopes and the stairs up to the loft.
- The design is agreed and a written quote follows.
- Every part is made in our workshop, ready for a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Before we arrive
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
