Cranford Loft Storage

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make loft storage for homes in Cranford, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • Needing storage in a loft office
  • Low eaves that nobody can use
  • A new loft conversion that needs storage

The problems loft storage solve

A loft room used as an office or guest room often needs storage too. Built-in storage under the slopes keeps the room flexible.

Common reasons to get in touch include:

  • A boarded loft that is hard to keep organised
  • A loft room that doubles as an office or guest room
  • A loft room that still feels unfinished
  • A dormer that is not being used

Osterley House, about 2.6 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, the low eaves and slopes of a converted loft are worth using.

Before you choose who makes it

  • How parking will work on your street
  • How they handle walls that aren’t straight
  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

Loft storage for homes in Cranford

Dormers are a natural place for shelving or a small desk. Dormers have their own shapes, and walls that are seldom square. We scribe the furniture to follow them. It uses space that might otherwise be wasted. We’ll talk through the options in Cranford. We make eaves cupboards from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a converted loft with no fitted furniture and a boarded loft that’s hard to keep organised.

Walls in houses from between the wars are normally straighter than in older ones, but seldom perfect. Around Cranford, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a big part of the housing, so we still scribe every piece to the wall. Lids, doors and drawers are set level on site so they run true.

We write quotes in plain English. They say what will be made, what it’s made from and how it will be finished, all taken from the design visit.

Your questions about loft storage in Cranford

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Hayes & Harlington station?

Yes, homes across Hounslow and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.

Will a conservation area stop me having loft storage fitted in Cranford?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

What happens during the design visit?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and talk through the design with you. We will also ask about access and parking, and a quote in writing follows.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Just mention it when you get in touch.

Do I choose the paint colour?

The choice is yours, and it is agreed with you before painting. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you have chosen.

How do you get large pieces into a loft?

Measuring the route is part of the design visit. We size every section for the tightest turn, and then assembled in the loft.

Before and after fitting day

A little care keeps the finish looking good, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. These practical tips help:

  • Make a list of what you want to store in the eaves
  • Look at the insulation and any vents behind the knee wall
  • Think about how you will reach into the eaves
  • Mention any parking rules on your street

Heavy items are best kept in the lower parts of the storage. It helps the runners and keeps the storage working well. Shelves are made for what you told us you’d store.

Keep the eaves ventilated and avoid pressing things against the back of the space. Squashed insulation works less well. Damp in the eaves is worth raising with the people who did the conversion.

Materials and finishes

Birch plywood

Its layered build gives birch plywood its strength. We use it for carcasses, shelves and drawer boxes, and its edge can be left visible or painted.

Moisture-resistant MDF

Because it cuts cleanly, MDF is ideal for angled panels under the slope. The grade we use is moisture-resistant and paints well. It makes up most of the visible parts.

From workshop to your room

Once the main sections are fixed in place, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, then checked again. How long fitting takes depends on the length of the eaves and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a 1920s or 1930s house, the hall and stairs are usually simple, but the route in is still measured, not just the room. Eaves cupboards arrive in sections and are assembled in place.

  1. It starts when you get in touch with a few details about the loft, and how you get up to it.
  2. We visit to measure the eaves and slopes and go through the design, including the headroom under the slope.
  3. You receive a written quote for the storage we have discussed, for you to look over.
  4. Your storage is made at our workshop and painted to your chosen colour. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The storage is fitted in the loft and checked, door by door.

How to prepare

  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Empty the space we will be working in
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician ahead of time

Advice

Pricing loft storage in Cranford

The price for your room depends on:

  • Parking near your home
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • How big the furniture is
  • Spray painting or hand painting

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Before the design visit

You do not need exact measurements or a plan. It’s enough to send:

  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • Approximate measurements of the space

Rough sizes are fine at the start. Everything is measured properly when we visit. To arrange it, use our contact form with some details about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

Making use of awkward spaces in Cranford

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Cranford were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 48%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 35%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. The Cranford Park Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Cranford. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need permission. If you are unsure, check with the council before work starts. About 45% of households in the streets around Cranford live in detached or semi-detached houses, according to Census 2021. A house like that usually has more rooms to plan around than a flat, and sometimes a driveway that makes unloading easier.

If your children go to Cranford Primary School or a school nearby, eaves cupboards can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit. Close to Hounslow Heath? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and eaves cupboards can give those things a place.
