Loft storage for your home in Ilford

About our loft storage in Ilford

Behind an eaves door, there is often insulation and a need for ventilation. Storage shouldn’t block the ventilation or squash the insulation. If you have concerns about what’s behind the eaves, ask the people who did the conversion. We look at this during the design visit in Ilford. We make eaves cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a dormer that isn’t being used and boxes and suitcases with no home.

With a large share of homes around Ilford built before 1919, under-stairs cupboards in older terraces often house the meters or the fuse board. Those have to stay reachable, so any storage is designed around them. Bays and sash windows in period houses are natural spots for a window seat.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

Honest limits

We make and fit furniture, and we don’t do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. Please bear these in mind too:

  • Fixing damp or ventilation problems in the eaves
  • Anything that needs Building Regulations sign-off
  • Electrical work in the loft

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can drop us a line using the contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer. Our process from visit to fitting.

What it’s made from

  • Hand-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Eaves doors and drawers
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Sloped wardrobe tops

How fitting day works

You are welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully. How long fitting takes depends on the shape of the room and the number of cupboards and drawers, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Hallways in period houses are often narrow, and the stairs turn sharply, so eaves cupboards are made in sections sized to get through. Floors, stairs and doorways are covered before anything is carried through.

  1. To begin, fill in our short enquiry form; a brief note on the loft and the storage you want is enough.
  2. At the design visit we measure the knee walls and the angle of each slope at more than one point, as they’re rarely even.
  3. Your written quote sets out the storage and the finish.
  4. The storage is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, cut to the angles we measured.
  5. On fitting day the units are set level and scribed to the slope and the knee wall.

How to prepare

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

For simple storage in a boarded loft, ready-made shelving can do the job. A fitted design earns its place in a loft room you live in. We’ll give you an honest view at the design visit. Alcoves and recesses in period houses are rarely a standard width or depth, so ready-made units rarely fill them properly. Made for the space, the furniture uses the full width and height.

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

What you get with us

  • Saturday work by arrangement
  • Made in moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
  • We work across all London boroughs

Questions from Ilford

Do you make loft storage for homes in Ilford?

Yes. We cover all of Redbridge and the rest of London, and Ilford is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

My house in Ilford is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

How long is the fitting for eaves storage?

How long the fitting takes depends on the length of the eaves and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We make the cupboards and drawers in our workshop, so the time at your home is spent fitting. If you’d like the fitting on a Saturday, that can be arranged.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.

What materials do you use for loft storage?

Our loft storage is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then painted. Stable materials suit a loft, where temperatures can vary. Your quote confirms the materials and finish.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need it. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

Why people ask for loft storage in Ilford

Some people want to make more of a dormer. Built-in furniture in a dormer puts it to work. It adds storage without crowding the room.

Common reasons to get in touch include:

  • Ready-made wardrobes too big for the stairs
  • A converted loft with no fitted furniture
  • A loft room with too many jobs
  • Nowhere to store bags and boxes

For a flat near Ilford station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

Before you choose who makes it

  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room
  • A quote in writing that sets out the job
  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote
  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote

Practical tips

Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it’s worth looking after. Here are a few tips worth knowing:

  • Look at the insulation and any vents behind the knee wall
  • Think about what will go in each cupboard or drawer
  • Empty the eaves so we can see what’s behind
  • Think about hanging space for a loft bedroom

Before we leave, we check every door and drawer with you. If there is an access door to the eaves, we make sure it opens fully. That way, everything works as planned.

Sharp edges and heavy boxes can chip a painted edge. Store tools in a box, not loose against the doors. Minor chips can be touched up with the matching colour.

Making use of awkward spaces in Ilford

In the streets around Ilford, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 58%) and the years since 2000 (about 20%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. There are 9 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Ilford. Being near listed buildings does not make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. The share of homes built before 1919 around Ilford, about 58%, is well above the figure for Redbridge as a whole, about 27%, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. So older-house details are more likely to come into the design of eaves cupboards.

If your children go to Winston Way Academy or a school nearby, eaves cupboards can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home. If you live in a period home close to St Alban's Church, sloping ceilings in a loft room suit wardrobes cut to the angle.
