Loft storage in Petersham, Richmond upon Thames

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. We make loft storage for homes in Petersham, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • Wasted space behind the knee walls
  • A converted loft with no fitted furniture
  • A dormer that isn’t being used

Loft storage in Petersham: what you get

Our work is in loft rooms that are already converted, or lofts that are boarded. The conversion itself isn’t our work, and conversions come under Building Regulations. With the room in place, we can plan the storage. If you have a converted loft in Petersham, the design visit is the first step. We make eaves cupboards from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are clothes with nowhere to go in a loft bedroom and a boarded loft with no proper shelving.

Hallways in period terraces are often long and narrow, with the stairs rising along one wall. Around Petersham, a large share of homes date from before 1919, so depth matters as much as width wherever storage goes. Shallow units keep the way through clear.

If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Tips worth knowing

The finish lasts best with a little care, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. These practical tips help:

  • Choose a calm colour for the loft
  • Check the route up to the loft
  • Make room so the whole loft can be measured
  • Make a list of what you want to store in the eaves

When we’ve finished fitting, the cupboards and drawers are ready. Paint needs time to cure fully, so treat the new finish gently at first. Keep tape and strong cleaners away from it while it settles.

Keep the eaves ventilated and avoid pressing things against the back of the space. Squashed insulation works less well. Damp in the eaves is worth raising with the people who did the conversion.

Is bespoke worth it?

A ready-made cupboard pushed into the eaves can block airflow. Bespoke storage is designed so it does not block ventilation or squash insulation. It helps keep the space in good order. Recesses in older houses come in every size except the standard ones, so ready-made units rarely fill them properly. Furniture made for the space fills it.

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. A larger piece means more material and more time. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

Common questions about loft storage

Can you fit furniture in a home close to St Margarets (London) station?

Yes. We cover all of Richmond upon Thames and the rest of London. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Petersham?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It’s useful to let us know about parking at the measuring visit.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. We’ll also ask about access and parking.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you don’t need to stay in the room.

Who chooses the colour?

You choose it, and it’s agreed with you before painting. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.

Will the storage fit up my loft stairs?

Measuring the route is part of the design visit. We size every section for the tightest turn, and then assembled in the loft.

Boards, parts and paint

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish can be applied once the storage is in place. Marks can be touched in without much trouble. Like any new paint, it needs time to cure fully.

Plinths and scribe strips

The floor in a loft room is rarely perfectly level. We set the storage level on a plinth or adjustable feet, so the doors and drawers run true.

What happens on fitting day

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and that happens on fitting day. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the shape of the room and the number of cupboards and drawers, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On fitting day, edges are trimmed on site to follow the walls, so we ask for a clear space to work near the room. Dust is kept down and cleared up as we go. Where the finish is hand-painted, it can be done after the pieces are in.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about your converted or boarded loft.
  2. At the design visit we measure the knee walls, slopes and stairs and plan the storage with you.
  3. A quote in writing follows, with the design, finish and fitting days set out, for you to look over.
  4. The cupboards and drawers are made in our workshop, in sections sized for the loft stairs. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home, scribed to the slopes and the walls.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

Getting a quote

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, when we have measured up and talked through the design. For a quote, send us a few details through our contact form.

What affects the cost of loft storage

Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. This is what makes the difference:

  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • The internal fittings
  • The width and height of the space
  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors

Access to the room makes a difference too. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, and that’s part of the price. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit.

Before the design visit

A few details help us understand the job before we visit. It’s useful to include:

  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth
  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters

If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, drop us a line using the contact form.

Petersham homes and loft storage

In the neighbourhood around Petersham, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 48%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 20%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Part of Petersham is in the Petersham Conservation Area, according to Historic England’s records. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house does not normally need planning permission. The council can confirm if you are not sure. More than a third of the homes in the area around Petersham (about 48%) were built before 1919, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Many older terraces have had loft conversions, leaving eaves spaces and slopes that suit fitted storage; we build storage once the loft is converted or boarded.

Near listed buildings like The Wick and Wick Cottage, under half a mile north-east of the centre of Petersham, older homes may keep original joinery that eaves cupboards can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. If your children go to The Russell Primary School or a school nearby, eaves cupboards can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home. Living in a block of flats near St Margarets (London) station? Then the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.
