Caring for painted furniture

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. After that, a few simple habits help:

  • Think about matching the woodwork or the walls
  • Plan where the tall end of a wardrobe can go
  • Clear the knee-wall spaces before the design visit if you can
  • Note how narrow the loft stairs are

A soft, damp cloth is the best way to keep the storage clean. Avoid scourers and harsh cleaners. Handles and drawer edges pick up marks first.

Avoid overloading drawers so they keep running smoothly. A quick sort every so often helps. Keep the heaviest things near the floor.

How we make loft storage for Pimlico

A converted loft often has more storage space than it first seems. We design and make eaves cupboards, drawers in the knee walls, wardrobes under the slopes and shelves in dormers, each shaped to the room. In Pimlico, as everywhere we work, it begins with a visit to measure and plan. We make eaves cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are unused space in a dormer and standard furniture that won’t go up the loft stairs.

Floors in newer homes are often finished and easy to mark, so they’re protected while storage is fitted. Many homes around Pimlico were built since 2000, and their plasterboard walls need fixings into the studs or made for the board. Skirting can be scribed around, or the storage can sit on its own plinth.

If the job needs another trade, like an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Fitted storage in Pimlico

In the area around Pimlico, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 42%) and before 1919 (about 29%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. There are 151 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Pimlico. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and eaves cupboards can be designed to work around them. The ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) now covers the whole of London, Westminster included. Vans bringing furniture to Pimlico fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. We plan parking and access with you during the design visit.

Living in a block of flats near London Victoria station? Then the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. Near listed buildings like Church of St James The Less, under half a mile north-east of the centre of Pimlico, older homes may keep original joinery that eaves cupboards can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent. If you live in a period home close to St Gabriel's, sloping ceilings in a loft room suit wardrobes cut to the angle.

Pimlico is within the City of Westminster, about 2 miles north of City of Westminster. We can visit homes in Pimlico on weekdays, or on a Saturday by arrangement. Pimlico is one of the places in Westminster where we make loft storage, and the borough has 29 places on our list.

Every home in SW1P, SW1V and SW1W is covered for loft storage, from the main roads to the quieter streets. We also make loft storage in nearby places such as City of Westminster (2 miles north), Marylebone (2 miles north), Soho (2 miles north), Chinatown (2 miles north), Covent Garden (2 miles north-east) and Mayfair (2 miles north).

  • Approval for structural changes
  • Any work on the structure of the house

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can message us from the contact page and we’ll give you a straight answer. How a job runs, step by step.

Fitting day, step by step

Fitting day follows a set order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on how much storage you want in the loft, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Newer developments sometimes have their own parking and loading rules, so tell us what applies at the design visit. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled and fixed. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch with some details about the loft room.
  2. We visit to measure and look at what’s behind the knee walls.
  3. Your quote sets out the design, the materials and the finish.
  4. Your storage is built in our workshop, shaped to the loft, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home and leave it ready to use.

Preparing the room

  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations. We cannot advise on your lease, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, after checking the walls during the design visit.

Questions we are often asked

Can you make loft storage for a home in Pimlico?

Yes, we work across Westminster, Pimlico included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with a few details.

My home in Pimlico is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Eaves cupboards are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Do you do the loft conversion too?

No, we build storage in lofts that are already converted or boarded. Loft conversions are building work, with Building Regulations to follow. When the room is finished, we can plan the storage.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not normally. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can need listed building consent, so ask the council’s conservation officer.

How long does it take to fit loft storage?

The time the fitting takes depends on the shape of the room and the number of cupboards and drawers, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Because everything is built in our workshop, the work in your home is the fitting itself. We keep the route up to the loft as clear as possible.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you don’t need to stay in the room.

Plinths and scribe strips

Scribe strips are trimmed to follow the wall and the slope. They help the storage look as though it was always there. The plinth does the same job at the floor.

Birch plywood

Drawers in the knee wall can carry heavy things, from boxes to bedding. That’s why we make drawer boxes from birch plywood. It also suits long shelves.
