How we make loft storage for Millbank
Many loft rooms are bedrooms, and storage for clothes is the first need. A wardrobe under the slope, knee-wall drawers and dormer shelves make a complete set. Designed as one, they give the room calm, consistent lines. For a home in Millbank, it is planned around your things. People typically come to us about unused space in a dormer and a converted loft with no fitted furniture, and the answer is made in our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
Hallways in period terraces are often long and narrow, with the stairs rising along one wall. A large share of the homes around Millbank were built before 1919, so depth matters as much as width wherever storage goes. Even shallow storage can hold a lot without narrowing the way through.
You get the quote in writing, so there’s time to read it properly. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

What affects the price in Millbank
Not every room costs the same, and it comes down to:
- How big the furniture is
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
- Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
- Doors and drawers, and how many
In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. Let us know about parking at the measuring visit, so it can be planned.
What we need to know
Getting some details early makes the visit more useful. Where you can, include:
- Examples of the look you’re after
- Rough measurements: width, height and depth
- Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
- Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
A quote begins with some details from you: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of photos if you can take them. When you’re ready, message us from the contact page. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

Your questions about loft storage in Millbank
Is Millbank in the area you cover for loft storage?
Yes, we work across Westminster, Millbank included, and across the rest of London. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit.
My home in Millbank is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?
At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. Eaves cupboards are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
Which materials go into your loft storage?
We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood gives strength to the carcasses and drawers, and MDF takes paint well for the doors and panels. The finish is spray-painted or hand-painted.
How long will the loft storage fitting take?
The time the fitting takes depends on the shape of the room and the number of cupboards and drawers, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. The storage is built in our workshop first, so the time in your home is spent fitting. We work tidily and keep the stairs and landing as clear as we can.
What do you do at the measuring visit?
We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and discuss the design with you. We will also ask about access and parking.
Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?
Not usually. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.
Flats, conversions and leaseholders
Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the measuring visit, and we will plan the fitting around them.
Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, often to make the most of a small or tricky room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.
When is bespoke worth it?
It is worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture typically costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.
Making use of awkward spaces in Millbank
Homes built before 1919 make up about 47% of the housing in the streets around Millbank, with about 25% built since 2000, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That matters for eaves cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Part of Millbank is in the Broadway and Christchurch Gardens Conservation Area, according to Historic England’s records. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. Strict stopping rules apply on red routes, which TfL runs. If you live on or close to a main road in Millbank, let us know during the design visit. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.
If you live in a flat close to London Victoria station, eaves cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. Close to St James's Park? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and eaves cupboards can give those things a place. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like London Underground Headquarters, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent.

Why bespoke in Millbank?
If you only need a few boxes in a boarded loft, standalone shelving may be enough. A fitted design earns its place in a loft room you live in. We’ll give you an honest view at the design visit. Chimney breasts in older houses stand out by different amounts, so the recesses either side are rarely the same, which means a matching pair of ready-made units seldom fits both. Fitted furniture is made to each one separately.
No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

Fitting day, step by step
When we arrive on fitting day, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. Next, we carry in the sections made at our workshop. How long the fitting takes depends on the length of the eaves and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a period home, the furniture is fitted to walls that are not straight, so each piece is trimmed and adjusted on site. We protect the floors and keep dust to a minimum. It helps to tell us about parking at the design visit, as terraced streets are often busy.
