Loft storage in Ratcliff
Looking after your furniture
The finish lasts best with a little care. These practical tips help:
- Choose a calm colour for the loft
- Plan where the tall end of a wardrobe can go
- Let us know about parking near your home
- Find out what’s behind the eaves, from insulation to vents
Once the fitting is done, the storage is ready to use. New paintwork takes time to cure fully, so go easy on it to begin with. Avoid sticky tape, heavy knocks and harsh cleaners while it hardens.
Keep the eaves ventilated and avoid pressing things against the back of the space. Insulation pressed flat does not do its job. Damp in the eaves is worth raising with the people who did the conversion.
Loft storage in Ratcliff
A converted loft often has more storage space than it first seems. Our loft storage includes eaves cupboards, knee-wall drawers, wardrobes under sloping ceilings and dormer shelving, each shaped to the room. In Ratcliff, as everywhere we work, it begins with a visit to measure and plan. People typically come to us about ready-made wardrobes too big for the stairs and seasonal things cluttering the loft room, and the answer is made at our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
Getting materials into a block means planning the lift, the corridor and the front door of the flat. Around Ratcliff, most households are in purpose-built flats, so the sections for eaves cupboards are planned at the measuring visit. Common parts are protected while the pieces come in.
After the design visit, we send you a quote in writing. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so it’s clear what’s included.

Loft storage in Ratcliff: local notes
In the streets around Ratcliff, the largest groups of homes date from between 1973 and 1999 (about 33%) and the years since 2000 (about 29%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how eaves cupboards are fixed and fitted. 20 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of the centre of Ratcliff. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. The Ultra Low Emission Zone has covered all of London since it reached the outer boroughs on 29 August 2023. It applies to every van that comes to fit furniture in Ratcliff. We go through parking and access during the design visit.
The wider area includes historic houses like Mansion House, about 1.9 miles west. For a period home anywhere nearby, a dormer in a converted loft can hold shelves or a small desk. If you live near Stepney Green Park, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and eaves cupboards can give those things a place.
Ratcliff is about 1 mile west of Whitechapel, part of the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. From period terraces to newer flats in Ratcliff, the furniture is designed around the room as we find it. In Tower Hamlets, Ratcliff is one of the places we cover, and the borough has 31 places on our list.
We make loft storage across the E1, E14 and SE16 postcode area. Whether you live on a street such as Wharf Lane, Glamis Road and Salter Road or on one nearby, we can visit to measure up for loft storage. Ratcliff sits close to the A101 and A126, and we plan where the van can stop before fitting day. Nearby, we also make loft storage in Shadwell (1 mile south), East End of London (1 mile north-west), Limehouse (1 mile north-east), Stepney (1 mile north) and Wapping (1 mile west). We also make loft storage in nearby places such as Cambridge Heath (2 miles north), Bromley (2 miles north-east), Old Ford (2 miles north-east), Donnybrook Quarter (2 miles north), Bow (2 miles north-east) and Isle of Dogs (2 miles south-east).

Ratcliff has its own railway station: Limehouse station. Well-known places in the area include The Royal London Hospital (0.8 miles north-west) and Tower of London (1.4 miles west). For a walk, there is Tower Hill and Lavender Pond.
Questions we’re often asked
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Ratcliff?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking during the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.
Will a conservation area stop me having loft storage fitted in Ratcliff?
Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Will the storage fit up my loft stairs?
Every piece is made in sections that fit up the stairs. We measure the way up along with the room itself. That way, even a large wardrobe can reach the loft.
Do I need to be at home on fitting day?
We need access, so someone has to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work.
Do I choose the paint colour?
You do. The paint colour is agreed with you.
Do you work outside London?
No. We work in London and nowhere else.
Flats, leases and landlords
In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways not just the room, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.
Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, once we’ve measured the way in.
Is it time for loft storage?
A loft room used as an office or guest room often needs storage too. Storage in the eaves leaves the main floor clear.
Some of the things we’re asked to solve include:
- A dormer that is not being used
- A converted loft with no fitted furniture
- Wasted space behind the knee walls
- A loft room with too many jobs
Near listed buildings like Church of St Paul, under half a mile west of the centre of Ratcliff, older homes may keep original joinery that eaves cupboards can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.
Choosing a carpenter
- Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
- Whether the route into your home has been checked
- Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
- Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done

When is bespoke worth it?
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it is easy to buy.
How fitting day works
The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that’s what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. Loading near a block of flats can take some planning, so details of bays, permits or a loading area help. The sections are assembled in the flat and fixed to suit the walls. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.
- First we hear about the loft room and what you’d like to store, including the eaves and any dormer.
- We measure the eaves, the slopes and the stairs up to the loft.
- We agree the cupboards, drawers and wardrobes, and send a quote in writing, with the finish set out.
- Every part is built in our workshop, ready for a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
- We carry it up, fit it and check every door and drawer with you.
Preparing the room
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
- Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
