Materials and finishes

Plinths and scribe strips

Loft rooms are seldom square. We use scribe strips and a plinth to take up the difference. That keeps the lines neat all round.

Doors and drawer fronts

An access door into the eaves can match the rest of the fronts. It opens fully, so the space behind can still be reached. The other fronts can be doors, drawers or both.

How we make loft storage for Isle of Dogs

Behind the short walls at the edge of a loft room, there is often space going to waste. Cupboards and drawers set into the knee wall make that space useful. Pull-out drawers mean you don’t have to crawl in. We measure and plan for the space you have in Isle of Dogs. If your home has a loft room that still feels unfinished and low eaves that nobody can use, that is what eaves cupboards are for, made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

A large number of homes around Isle of Dogs date from 2000 onwards, and newer homes rarely come with much storage. Halls, landings and the space beneath the stairs are where fitted storage can help. Plasterboard stud walls are common, so fixings go into the studs or use fixings made for the board.

Our quotes are written in plain words. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

Making use of awkward spaces in Isle of Dogs

Homes built since 2000 make up about 52% of the housing in the streets around Isle of Dogs, with about 24% built between 1973 and 1999, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. The National Heritage List has 20 entries within half a mile of the centre of Isle of Dogs. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. Purpose-built flats are home to about 83% of households in the area around Isle of Dogs, according to Census 2021. For a flat, eaves cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.

If you live in a period home close to Church of St Nicholas, the knee walls of a converted loft can take drawers as well as cupboards. Queen's House, about 0.8 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, the low eaves and slopes of a converted loft are worth using. For families living near Harbinger Primary School, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit.

Practical tips

A few practical points help before and after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:

  • Mention any parking rules on your street
  • Decide whether you’d prefer drawers, cupboards or both
  • Think about hanging space for a loft bedroom
  • Bring paint colours you like to the design visit

Wiping the fronts with a soft, damp cloth is usually all they need. Dry them afterwards, and avoid abrasive pads and strong solvents. The edges around handles are touched most.

Don’t overfill drawers, as heavy loads strain the runners. It is useful to clear out now and then. Keep the heaviest things near the floor.

What we don’t do

We’d rather be clear about where our work stops:

  • Loft conversions, which we do not carry out
  • Insulation or ventilation work behind the eaves
  • Approval for structural changes

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can send us a few details through our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer. Our process from visit to fitting.

What it is made from

  • Hand-painted finish
  • Sloped wardrobe tops
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Eaves doors and drawers

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it is easy to buy.

How fitting day works

At the end, we tidy up. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together. How long the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want in the loft, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Newer developments sometimes have their own parking and loading rules, so it helps to let us know at the measuring visit. The furniture comes in sections and is fixed in place. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. You let us know about the loft room.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and agree the layout and colour.
  3. A written quote follows.
  4. We make the cupboards and drawers in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The storage is fitted and scribed to the slopes, and any hand painting is done on site.
  6. Fresh paint needs time to cure, so use the doors and drawers gently at first.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall

Common questions about loft storage

How do you fit loft storage in a flat in Isle of Dogs?

We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Eaves cupboards are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Greenwich station?

Yes, homes across Tower Hamlets and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

What happens when you come to measure?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. We will also ask about access and parking, and a quote in writing follows.

How long will the loft storage fitting take?

How long fitting takes depends on the length of the eaves and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We make the cupboards and drawers in our workshop, so the time at your home is spent fitting. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Typically not. Inside a house, fitted furniture doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings can need listed building consent for works that affect their character, so check with the council first.

Which materials go into your loft storage?

We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood gives strength to the carcasses and drawers, while the doors and panels are MDF, which paints well. The finish is spray-painted or hand-painted.
