Why bespoke in Donnybrook Quarter?

Off-the-shelf furniture is made for straight walls and full-height ceilings. In a loft room, standard pieces leave tricky gaps under the slope. Bespoke storage follows the angle of the ceiling and fills the knee wall. It’s a bigger investment, and the gain is the space it uses. Rooms in newer homes are often compact, and standard depths can take too much floor, whereas fitted pieces can be as shallow as the space needs. It can still go to the ceiling.

Access to the room makes a difference too. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, and that is part of the price. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit.

How we make loft storage for Donnybrook Quarter

A dormer can take shelves, a desk or a window seat. Their sides are often angled, and their walls rarely straight. We scribe the furniture to follow them. It adds storage without taking up the main floor. At the design visit in Donnybrook Quarter, we will look at what fits. Most enquiries start with space under the eaves going to waste and an empty dormer that could hold shelves; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Hallways in newer flats and houses are often short, with doors opening off every side, so there may be only one useful stretch of wall. With many homes around Donnybrook Quarter built since 2000, the hall is often where we look first. A shallow cupboard can take coats, shoes and the vacuum cleaner without blocking a door.

A quote in writing follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the measuring visit.

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, as it makes good use of an awkward room. It is made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, finished by spray or by hand.

Donnybrook Quarter homes and loft storage

Homes built since 2000 make up about 41% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Donnybrook Quarter, with about 22% built before 1919, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. There are 18 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Donnybrook Quarter. Being near listed buildings does not make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. About 66% of households in the neighbourhood around Donnybrook Quarter live in purpose-built flats, based on Census 2021. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.

If you live near Grove Hall Park, eaves cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Lock Cottages, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent. If you live in a flat close to Hackney Wick station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

What it costs

A few things affect what fitted furniture costs:

  • The width and height of the space
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size is the starting point. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

Helping us understand the room

Here’s what helps us most when you contact us:

  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Where you live, with the postcode

The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and discuss the design with you. A quote in writing follows the visit, so you can take your time with it. To book one, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Questions from Donnybrook Quarter

My home in Donnybrook Quarter is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Eaves cupboards are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Donnybrook Quarter?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.

How long is the fitting for eaves storage?

The time the fitting takes depends on the length of the eaves and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We make the cupboards and drawers in our workshop, so the time at your home is spent fitting. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

Do photos help?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough sizes. It helps to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch, and we’ll see what we can do.

Fitting day, step by step

Once the main sections are fixed in place, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, then checked again. How long the fitting takes depends on the length of the eaves and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On the day, floors are covered first and the sections brought in. The pieces are levelled and fixed with fixings that suit the wall. Hand-painted finishes can be completed once the furniture is in.

Advice

How it is made

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is made in layers, which makes it strong and stable. We use it for carcasses, shelves and drawer boxes, with the edge either shown or painted.

Doors and drawer fronts

The doors and drawer fronts are the face of the storage. They can be plain or panelled, with handles chosen to suit the room. Their tops follow the line of the slope.
