Shadwell Loft Storage
Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on loft storage in Shadwell starts with a design visit, and everything is made in our workshop.
- Unused space in a dormer
- A sloping ceiling with no room for a wardrobe
- Boxes piled on loft boards

Do you need loft storage in Shadwell?
Many people get in touch once their loft conversion is complete. Standard furniture rarely suits the new room. Fitted storage finishes the room.
People usually get in touch with us about things like these:
- A loft room that still feels unfinished
- A dormer that is not being used
- Boxes piled on loft boards
- Seasonal things cluttering the loft room

How we make loft storage for Shadwell
The low space behind a knee wall is often the most useful in the room. Eaves cupboards and pull-out drawers built into the knee wall put it to work. Pull-out drawers mean you don’t have to crawl in. At the design visit in Shadwell, we’ll see what fits. If you’re living with boxes and suitcases with no home and a new loft conversion that needs storage, eaves cupboards made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish can solve it.
Most homes around Shadwell are purpose-built flats, from mansion blocks to newer blocks. Older mansion block flats can have bays, long corridors and tall ceilings with space to use, while modern flats often have short halls and service boxing to work around. If you have a maisonette or duplex, the stairs can take storage too.
After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish.

Flat-pack or bespoke?
Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it’s quick to buy.
Materials and finishes
Doors and drawer fronts
Any door that gives access behind the knee wall can look like the others. It opens wide, so you can still get into the eaves. The other fronts can be doors, drawers or both.
Plinths and scribe strips
Scribe strips are trimmed to follow the wall and the slope. They’re one reason fitted storage looks built in. At floor level, the plinth hides any slope in the floor.

Storage in Shadwell homes: local notes
In the area around Shadwell, the largest groups of homes date from between 1973 and 1999 (about 35%) and the years since 2000 (about 28%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Near the centre of Shadwell, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Peter (Grade I), about 0.5 miles west, and Church of St George in the East (Grade I), about 0.6 miles west. For a listed home, works inside that affect its character can need listed building consent from the council, for instance removing or fixing into original panelling. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. Much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones run by the boroughs. A van working in Shadwell will usually need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension arranged through the council, which often needs notice. Let us know about parking near your home during the design visit.
If you live in a period home close to St Paul's Church, the knee walls of a converted loft can take drawers as well as cupboards. The wider area includes historic houses like Mansion House, about 1.9 miles west. For a period home anywhere nearby, sloping ceilings in a loft room suit wardrobes cut to the angle.

FAQs: loft storage in Shadwell
My home in Shadwell is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?
We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Eaves cupboards are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
Can you fit furniture on an external wall?
It needs a little planning: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.
How long will the loft storage fitting take?
How long fitting takes depends on the shape of the room and the number of cupboards and drawers, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We make the cupboards and drawers in our workshop, so the time at your home is spent fitting. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.
Can a wardrobe follow a sloping ceiling?
Yes. Bespoke wardrobes are made to the angle of the ceiling. The tall end takes hanging space, and the low end can hold shelves or drawers. It’s scribed to the slope and walls.
Which materials go into your loft storage?
We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood gives strength to the carcasses and drawers, while the doors and panels are MDF, which paints well. Everything is finished by spray painting or hand painting.
Fitting day, step by step
If anything comes up on the day, just ask. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving the room tidy. The time the fitting takes depends on the shape of the room and the number of cupboards and drawers, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a block without a lift, every section goes up the stairs, so it is sized to be manageable. The stair turns and landings set the limit. The pieces are assembled in the flat.
