Loft storage in Walworth, Southwark

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on loft storage in Walworth starts with a design visit, and everything is made at our workshop.

  • An empty dormer that could hold shelves
  • Boxes piled on loft boards
  • A loft room with too many jobs

About our loft storage in Walworth

Many loft rooms are bedrooms, and storage for clothes is the first need. Wardrobes under the slope, drawers in the knee wall and shelves in the dormer can all work together. Designed as one, they give the room calm, consistent lines. For a home in Walworth, it is planned around your things. We make eaves cupboards from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about boxes and suitcases with no home and low eaves that nobody can use.

With most households around Walworth in purpose-built flats, mansion blocks and modern developments are both possible. Mansion block flats often have long hallways, bays and high ceilings that suit fitted storage, while newer flats tend to have compact halls and boxed-in services. If you have a maisonette or duplex, the stairs can take storage too.

A quote in writing follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish.

What affects the price in Walworth

What you pay depends on:

  • Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • How square the room is
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish

Access to the room makes a difference too. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit.

Before the design visit

There is no need for exact sizes or plans. Just send what you can:

  • How you want to use the space
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Rough measurements: width, height and depth

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we’ve measured up and talked through the design. For a quote, use our contact form.

How fitting works for loft storage

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and fitting day is where that happens. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the length of the eaves and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Some buildings have a concierge, a lift booking system or set working hours, so check them with the managing agent before fitting day. Floors in the flat and the common parts are protected while the furniture comes in.

  1. You get in touch and describe the loft room, its slopes and any dormer.
  2. We visit to measure the slopes and eaves and talk through cupboards, drawers and wardrobes under them.
  3. A written quote follows, with the design, materials and finish.
  4. In our workshop we build each section from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood to follow the slope.
  5. We fit the storage in the loft, trimming the edges so they meet the ceiling neatly, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

How to prepare

Before and after fitting day

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. After that, a few simple habits help:

  • Think about hanging space for a loft bedroom
  • Decide whether you’d prefer drawers, cupboards or both
  • Clear the knee-wall spaces before the design visit if you can
  • Make a list of what you want to store in the eaves

We open each door and run each drawer with you before we go. Any access to the eaves is checked so it still opens. That way, everything works as planned.

Keep sharp or very heavy items away from the painted fronts. Store tools in a box, not loose against the doors. Minor chips can be touched up with the matching colour.

Common questions about loft storage

My home in Walworth is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

Do you cover homes near Elephant & Castle station?

Yes. We cover all of Southwark and the rest of London. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Can you convert my loft as well?

No, we build storage in lofts that are already converted or boarded. Loft conversions are building work, with Building Regulations to follow. When the room is finished, we can plan the storage.

Who chooses the colour?

You choose it, and it’s agreed with you before painting. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you’ve chosen.

Can I send pictures ahead of the visit?

Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, particularly with rough sizes. You can send them when you send us a few details through our contact form.

How long does it take to fit loft storage?

The time the fitting takes depends on the length of the eaves and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. We make the cupboards and drawers in our workshop, so the time at your home is spent fitting. If you’d like the fitting on a Saturday, that can be arranged.

Fitted storage in Walworth

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Walworth were built since 2000 (about 33%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 27%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Near the centre of Walworth, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Peter (Grade I), under half a mile south, and English Martyrs School (part) (Grade II), under half a mile east. If your own home is listed, changes inside that alter its character, like fixing into or removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. It’s worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. Near central London, streets tend to be narrow and busy, so the route from the van to your door is planned ahead of time.

If your home is one of the older houses near Lady Margaret Church, eaves cupboards in a converted loft are scribed to slopes that are rarely even. Living in a block of flats near Elephant & Castle station? Then the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. Close to Nursery Row Park? Eaves cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.

How it’s made

Pull-out drawers

Drawers along the knee wall make a neat, low run of storage. The top can be a surface for books or lamps. The design visit settles the mix.

Moisture-resistant MDF

Moisture-resistant MDF is stable and takes paint well. It suits the doors, drawer fronts and panels, where the finish is most on show.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths.
