Loft storage designed for your room

How we make loft storage for Nunhead

A loft room can hold a great deal of storage, if the low spaces are used well. Our loft storage includes eaves cupboards, knee-wall drawers, wardrobes under sloping ceilings and dormer shelving, each shaped to the room. For a home in Nunhead, it starts with a design visit to measure and talk it through. If your home has a loft room with too many jobs and standard furniture that won’t go up the loft stairs, that is what eaves cupboards are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Outside walls in houses from before 1919 are normally solid brick, which can be cold, so storage against it is designed with ventilation behind. A large share of the homes around Nunhead date from then. Damp should be sorted before anything is fitted against the wall.

A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It sets out the eaves cupboard designed for your room, what it is made from and how it is finished, and it’s what the workshop builds to.

Flats, conversions and lettings

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the design visit.

If the property is let, we will need access agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. An agent can arrange access for you.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

Questions from Nunhead

Will a conservation area stop me having loft storage fitted in Nunhead?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Do you make loft storage for homes in Nunhead?

Yes, we work across Southwark, Nunhead included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with a few details.

Will eaves storage block the ventilation?

It shouldn’t, if it’s designed properly. We design eaves storage so it does not block ventilation or squash insulation. If you have concerns about what’s already behind the eaves, it’s worth asking whoever converted the loft.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps, which helps avoid condensation and mould. If there’s damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

Is it possible to fit a wardrobe under the slope?

Yes. Bespoke wardrobes are made to the angle of the ceiling. Hanging goes where there is height, with shelves where it is low. It is cut to fit the ceiling and walls exactly.

My walls are not straight. Is that a problem?

Walls and floors that are not true are part of the job in older homes. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth.

Is bespoke worth it?

In a loft room, walls and floors are seldom square. Standard furniture leaves visible gaps. Our storage is scribed to the room and set level, so the lines look right. The two recesses beside a chimney breast are seldom an identical size, and standard units bought as a pair rarely suit both. Fitted furniture is made to each one separately.

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, which the quote allows for. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured.

How it’s made

Pull-out drawers

Drawers that pull out make the eaves easy to use. You see everything at once. They’re designed around any access points behind the knee wall.

Doors and drawer fronts

An access door into the eaves can match the rest of the fronts. It opens wide, so you can still get into the eaves. The other fronts can be doors, drawers or both.

How fitting works for loft storage

Once the main sections are fixed in place, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, and then we check it all again. How long fitting takes depends on how much storage you want in the loft, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Original hallway tiles and old floorboards are worth protecting, so they’re covered before anything comes in. Drilling into lath and plaster is done with care, so the plaster around stays sound. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.

  1. You let us know about the loft room.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and agree the layout and colour.
  3. A written quote follows.
  4. We make the cupboards and drawers in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The storage is fitted and scribed to the slopes, and any hand painting is done on site.
  6. Go easy on new paintwork while it cures; hand-painted surfaces are easy to touch up later.

How to prepare

  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician ahead of time
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going

If you know what you want, say so; if you do not, that is fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, use our contact form.

Storage in Nunhead homes: local notes

In the neighbourhood around Nunhead, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 47%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 15%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how eaves cupboards are fixed and fitted. Nunhead is partly covered by the Nunhead Cemetery Conservation Area, one of the conservation areas recorded by Historic England. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Your council can advise if you’re unsure. More than a third of the homes in the streets around Nunhead (about 47%) were built before 1919, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Many older terraces have had loft conversions, leaving eaves spaces and slopes that suit fitted storage; we build storage once the loft is converted or boarded.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Chapel of Nunhead Cemetery, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent. Queen's House, about 2.4 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, the knee walls of a converted loft can take drawers as well as cupboards. If you live near Peckham Rye, eaves cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.
