Caring for painted furniture

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. Here are a few tips worth knowing:

  • Plan where the tall end of a wardrobe can go
  • Make room so the whole loft can be measured
  • Think about how you will reach into the eaves
  • Think about matching the woodwork or the walls

We open each door and run each drawer with you before we go. If there is an access door to the eaves, we make sure it opens fully. You will know it all works as it should.

Check now and then that handles and hinges are tight. A loose screw is easy to tighten before it works loose. If something stops working smoothly, fill in our short enquiry form and describe it.

Loft storage for homes in Wood Green

Loft rooms are often bedrooms, so storage for clothes matters. A wardrobe under the slope, knee-wall drawers and dormer shelves make a complete set. Planned together, they make the room feel ordered. We design them around what you need to store in Wood Green. If your home has a dormer that isn’t being used and space under the eaves going to waste, that’s what eaves cupboards are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Original features like shutters, cupboard doors and panelling are worth keeping where they survive. With a large share of the homes around Wood Green built before 1919, fitted storage can be designed to sit alongside them. Panel details can be drawn to suit the house. If your home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original joinery.

Our quotes are written in plain words, without jargon. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished, all taken from the design visit.

Questions from Wood Green

My home in Wood Green is a period house with walls that are not straight. Is that a problem?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Wood Green?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Will the storage fit up my loft stairs?

We make the storage in sections sized for the route. We measure the way up not just the room. It means a full wardrobe can still reach the room.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture, which helps avoid condensation and mould. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

Do you work in Wood Green?

Yes. Wood Green is part of the area we cover. To arrange a design visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Which materials go into your loft storage?

Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. Stable materials suit a loft, where temperatures can vary. Your quote confirms the materials and finish.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: flat-pack is normally cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it is easy to buy.

Storage in Wood Green homes: local notes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 62% of the housing in the streets around Wood Green, with about 13% built since 2000, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. The Trinity Gardens Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Wood Green. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Your council can advise if you are unsure. More than half of the homes in the neighbourhood around Wood Green (about 62%) were built before 1919, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Many older terraces have had loft conversions, leaving eaves spaces and slopes that suit fitted storage.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Top Rank Club, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent. For a flat near Alexandra Palace station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. The wider area includes historic houses such as Bruce Castle, about 1.4 miles east. For a period home anywhere nearby, eaves cupboards in a converted loft are scribed to slopes that are rarely even.

When you need someone else

We don’t treat damp or carry out building work, and there are a few other limits too:

  • Approval for structural changes
  • Loft conversions, which we do not carry out
  • Altering the structure of the loft

Not sure whether your space suits loft storage? You can fill in our short enquiry form and we will tell you before you arrange a visit. How it works.

Materials and parts

  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Sloped wardrobe tops
  • Eaves doors and drawers
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Spray-painted finish

What affects the cost of loft storage

When we put a quote together, we consider:

  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • The internal fittings
  • How square the room is
  • Parking near your home

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. You will see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

Helping us understand the room

To give us a picture of the room, it helps to include:

  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Fitting day, step by step

Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the length of the eaves and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. If your hall still has its original tiles or boards, they’re covered before any carrying starts. Drilling into lath and plaster is done with care, so the plaster around stays sound. Decorating around the furniture afterwards is for your decorator.

  1. It starts with a few details from you.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and agree the layout and colour.
  3. A quote in writing follows.
  4. The storage is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, and sprayed there if you chose a spray finish.
  5. The storage is fitted and scribed to the slopes, and any hand painting is done on site.
  6. Fresh paint needs time to cure, so use the doors and drawers gently at first.

Before fitting day

  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
