Charing Cross Bespoke Kitchens

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on bespoke kitchens in Charing Cross starts with a design visit, and everything is built in our workshop.

  • A kitchen for a room that is not square
  • More storage in a small kitchen
  • An island where space allows

How we make bespoke kitchens for Charing Cross

Moisture-resistant MDF suits kitchens well, because it copes with a room that gets steamy. For drawer boxes and shelves, birch plywood is a good choice. Cabinets are spray painted in the workshop or hand painted, in the colours you choose. Typical reasons to get in touch are tall larder storage and cabinets that suit lean and sloping walls; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

An older kitchen often has a sash window and a back door, which fix where things can go. With a large share of the homes around Charing Cross built before 1919, the layout is drawn around those fixed points. Your plumber connects the sink where the design puts it. The worktop, sink and appliances are your choice.

After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you are getting.

Do you need bespoke kitchens in Charing Cross?

A common reason is a room that ready-made units do not fit. Standard units are made in fixed sizes, and the gaps get filled with panels. A bespoke kitchen is made to the room instead.

A few of the things people ask us to solve include:

  • Cabinets that suit lean and sloping walls
  • A kitchen island with room around it
  • Tall larder storage
  • A painted dresser for the kitchen

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St Martin in the Fields, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • How the furniture will be finished, and where

How to choose a carpenter in London

Bespoke kitchens for homes in Charing Cross

About 50% of the homes in the area around Charing Cross went up before 1919, and about 21% since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Part of Charing Cross is in the Trafalgar Square Conservation Area, according to Historic England’s records. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are largely about how buildings look from outside. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. About 77% of households in the neighbourhood around Charing Cross live in purpose-built flats, according to Census 2021. For a flat, kitchens are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.

The wider area includes historic houses such as Benjamin Franklin House, about 0.1 miles east. If your own home is a period one, a narrow back addition or an old chimney breast may shape the kitchen layout. For a family home near Soho Parish CofE Primary School, a drawer set aside for lunch boxes and water bottles keeps mornings calmer.

How fitting day works

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and that happens on fitting day. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the kitchen and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On fitting day in an older house, the main job is scribing to walls and levelling on floors that slope, so each piece is trimmed and adjusted on site. Floors are protected, and dust is kept down as far as possible. It helps to tell us about parking at the measuring visit, as terraced streets are often busy.

  1. You get in touch with a few details about the kitchen.
  2. We visit, measure and go through the layout, larder, dresser or island, where space allows.
  3. You receive a written quote, setting out the cabinets, materials and finish.
  4. Everything is made at our workshop.
  5. The cabinets are fitted in your home, with plumbing, gas and electrics by your plumber, a Gas Safe engineer and your electrician.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall

Getting a quote

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we have measured up and talked through the design. For a quote, fill in our short enquiry form.

Advice

When you need someone else

Damp treatment and building work are for other specialists, and there are a few other limits too:

  • Painting the walls around the kitchen
  • Plumbing, which is for your plumber
  • Building work, such as removing walls

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can use our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer. How a job runs, step by step.

How it’s made

Plinths and scribe strips

These details are what make a kitchen look built for an older room.

Larder and dresser units

Larders and dressers can fill an alcove or end a run in a way standard units cannot.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s normally a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

Your questions about bespoke kitchens in Charing Cross

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Charing Cross?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.

My house in Charing Cross is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

Is there room for an island in my kitchen?

If there is enough room, yes. An island needs clear floor around it to open doors and move about, and we measure for it at the measuring visit. If the room is narrow, we’ll suggest other layouts.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Usually not. Inside a house, fitted furniture doesn’t normally need planning permission. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first.

Where is the furniture made?

Each piece is made at our workshop for the room it’s going into, then fitted in your home. It is built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps, which helps avoid condensation and mould. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.
