TV and Media Units in Charing Cross

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. We make TV and media units for homes in Charing Cross, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • Standard units leaving gaps
  • A screen at the wrong height
  • Boxes with no ventilation

Speakers need their own thought. A soundbar typically sits just below the TV. Speakers work best in the open rather than behind closed doors, so we plan open spaces for them. We make TV and media units from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are alcoves either side of the chimney breast going to waste and a big screen that dominates the wall.

A large share of the homes around Charing Cross were built before 1919, and in London most homes of that age are Victorian or Edwardian. Main rooms in houses like these normally have a chimney breast with an alcove on each side, which gives TV and media units an obvious place to go. Walls are rarely flat, so each piece is scribed to the plaster and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

How fitting works for TV and media units

At the end, we tidy up and lift the floor protection. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and explain how to look after the paint. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Terraced streets in London are often lined with parked cars, so it is useful to tell us at the design visit what’s outside. The van is unloaded quickly, with the sections carried straight in. Saturday fitting can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch with details of the room and where it is in your home.
  2. At the design visit we measure the wall and also the hall, stairs and doorways the unit has to pass through.
  3. A written quote follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. In our workshop we make the unit in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The sections are carried in, assembled and set level, ready for your equipment. The finish is sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.

Before fitting day

  • Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room

Practical tips

Getting the most from TV and media units starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:

  • Let us know about access early
  • Talk to your electrician early about sockets
  • Plan open spaces for anything controlled by a remote
  • Think about whether you will upgrade the screen

Use the access panels and cable routes when you add or change leads instead of making new ones. It keeps the unit tidy.

Don’t let clutter build up against the unit’s vents.

Flats, leases and landlords

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, once we’ve measured the way in.

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. If there’s a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Let us know about it when you contact us.

Charing Cross homes and TV and media units

About 50% of the homes in the area around Charing Cross went up before 1919, and about 21% since 2000, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. 37 conservation areas have at least part of their area less than a mile from the middle of Charing Cross. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings. In inner London, a large part of the street parking sits inside borough-run controlled parking zones. That normally means a van in Charing Cross needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council. It’s useful to tell us about parking at the measuring visit.

If you live near Victoria Embankment Gardens, a room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone. If your children go to Soho Parish CofE Primary School or a school nearby, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of St Martin in the Fields, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent.

When you need someone else

Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work aren’t part of what we do. There are a few other points to bear in mind:

  • Setting up and tuning the TV, boxes and speakers
  • New sockets behind the TV, which need an electrician
  • Repairing plaster or redecorating

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Screen sizes change, and a stand chosen for today’s set may not suit the next. We can plan the opening with a bigger screen in mind. Off-the-shelf furniture is made for flat walls and level floors, which older houses rarely have, so you end up with gaps, wobbles and units that do not meet the skirting. Fitted furniture is scribed to the wall instead.

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size comes first. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Questions we’re often asked

Is Charing Cross in the area you cover for TV and media units?

Yes, Charing Cross is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Westminster and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, and then we send a quote.

How do you fit TV and media units in a flat in Charing Cross?

At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. TV and media units are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Can the TV unit fit a bigger TV later?

We can size the opening for the screen you might buy next. Tell us the size you have in mind.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

It can be done with some care: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. Damp treatment isn’t something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

Is there room for a soundbar?

Speakers and soundbars get open shelves sized for them. Closed doors muffle sound, so we leave them open.

How long will the fitting take?

How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. We’ll talk you through what to expect beforehand.
