Loft storage in Charing Cross: what you get
Sloping ceilings make standard wardrobes hard to fit. We shape wardrobes to the slope, putting hanging space at the tall end and shelves or drawers where it is low. It makes the most of the room’s height. We will plan it during the design visit in Charing Cross. We make eaves cupboards from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are needing storage in a loft office and an empty dormer that could hold shelves.
A solid brick outside wall in an older house can be cold and sometimes damp, so a gap and ventilation behind fitted storage help avoid condensation. That matters around Charing Cross, where a large share of the homes are that old. Damp should be sorted before anything is fitted against the wall.
Everything we agree at the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

What it is made from
Doors and drawer fronts
Fronts are made from moisture-resistant MDF and painted to your colour. Angled fronts are cut to follow the slope, keeping the lines neat.
Moisture-resistant MDF
In a loft, stability matters, and moisture-resistant MDF is stable. It gives a smooth base for paint. It forms the doors and panels.
Your questions about loft storage in Charing Cross
How do you fit loft storage in a flat in Charing Cross?
At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. Eaves cupboards are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.
Do you make loft storage for homes in Charing Cross?
Yes, we work across Westminster, Charing Cross included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with some details.
My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?
That is normal in older homes, and it’s what scribing is for. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.
Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes, by arrangement. Let us know when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.
Is it possible to fit a wardrobe under the slope?
Yes. We shape the wardrobe to follow the slope, with hanging at the tall end and shelves or drawers lower down. It makes the most of the space. We’ll work out the layout when we visit.
Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?
Not typically. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need it. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.

What affects the cost of loft storage
What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. The main factors are:
- Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
- Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
- How many doors and drawers there are
- The finish: spray painted or hand painted
Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, which the quote allows for. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose.
Before the design visit
A little information at the start saves time later. Where you can, include:
- What the furniture needs to hold
- Any ideas or images you’ve saved
- Rough measurements: width, height and depth
- Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, once the room is measured and the design talked through. For a quote, use our contact form.
Fitted storage in Charing Cross
Homes built before 1919 make up about 50% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Charing Cross, with about 21% built since 2000, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. 37 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of central Charing Cross. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. TfL’s Ultra Low Emission Zone covers every part of London, Westminster included. So any van that delivers or fits furniture in Charing Cross is covered by it. We go through parking and access during the design visit.
For a flat near London Charing Cross station, eaves cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. If you live in a period home close to St Martin-in-the-Fields, a dormer in a converted loft can hold shelves or a small desk. Near listed buildings like Church of St Martin in the Fields, under half a mile north of the centre of Charing Cross, older homes may keep original joinery that eaves cupboards can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent.
Charing Cross is about 1 mile north-west of City of Westminster, in the City of Westminster. We work across all London boroughs and the City of London, and Charing Cross is part of that. Across Westminster, we cover Charing Cross.
Postcode districts we cover here for loft storage: W1F, W1D and W1S. If your home is on a street like Duck Lane, Drury Lane and Bridle Lane, or close by, we can arrange a design visit for loft storage. The A4 and A301 run close to Charing Cross, so if your home is on a main road, mention it when you get in touch. Nearby, we also make loft storage in St James's (1 mile west), Adelphi (1 mile north-east), Chinatown (1 mile north-west), West End (1 mile north) and Covent Garden (1 mile north-east). Elsewhere in Westminster, we also cover Paddington Green (2 miles north-west), Paddington (2 miles west), Connaught Village (2 miles west), Lisson Grove (2 miles north-west), Westbourne (3 miles west) and Little Venice (3 miles west).

Fitting day, step by step
With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly. How long the fitting takes depends on the shape of the room and the number of cupboards and drawers, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. In a period home, the furniture is fitted to walls that are not straight, so there’s some trimming and adjusting on site. We protect the floors and keep dust to a minimum. It’s useful to let us know about parking at the design visit, as terraced streets are often busy.
- To begin, drop us a line using the contact form; a brief note on the loft and the storage you want is enough.
- At the design visit we measure the knee walls and the angle of each slope at more than one point, as they’re rarely even.
- A written quote follows, with the design, materials and finish.
- In our workshop we build each section from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood to follow the slope.
- On fitting day the units are set level and scribed to the slope and the knee wall, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
How to prepare
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
- Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician ahead of time
How to get a quote
A quote begins with a few details from you: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of photos if you can take them. When you’re ready, get in touch through our contact form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

When is bespoke worth it?
Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s typically a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
Flats, conversions and leaseholders
If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations. We cannot advise on your lease, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.
Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it.
