About our TV and media units in Dalston
Built-in TV and media units bring the screen, set-top boxes, speakers and cables together in one piece of furniture. The wall is planned as a whole, rather than a stand with wires trailing behind it. For a living room in Dalston, we start with a design visit to measure and talk through what you use. If your home has speakers muffled behind doors and somewhere to keep games tidy, that’s what TV and media units are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
With most households around Dalston in purpose-built flats, getting the furniture into the building matters as much as the design. Each piece is built in sections that fit the stairs, the lift and the doorways, then joined and scribed in the room. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.
The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

What TV and media units can’t fix
Some parts of a job need another trade, from an electrician to a plumber or a Gas Safe registered engineer. Here is what to bear in mind:
- Moving sockets or adding new wiring, which is for your electrician
- Connecting the TV signal or internet
- Setting up and tuning the TV, boxes and speakers
Not sure whether your space suits TV and media units? You can fill in our short enquiry form and we’ll tell you. Our process from visit to fitting.

From workshop to your room
At the end, we tidy up and lift the floor protection. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together. The time the fitting takes depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. With little room to spare in a flat, pieces come in as they’re needed. Floors are covered and dust is kept down. The fixings suit each wall, whether solid or stud.
- You get in touch about a built-in TV unit.
- At the design visit, we measure the wall and plan the screen space, cable routes and ventilation with you.
- You receive a quote setting out the layout and the paint finish.
- We build the unit in our workshop, with routes and ventilation planned in.
- Fitting day: the unit goes in, is levelled and scribed, and the cable routes are left clear. A hand-painted finish is done on site, if you chose one.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves

TV and media units in Dalston: local notes
In the neighbourhood around Dalston, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 35%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 24%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how TV and media units are fixed and fitted. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Dalston include Church of St Mark (Grade II*), under half a mile north, and Church of St Barnabas (Grade II*), about 0.5 miles north. For a listed home, works inside that affect its character can need listed building consent from the council, for instance removing or fixing into original panelling. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of inner London. For fitting in Dalston, a van usually needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It’s useful to let us know about parking at the design visit.
For an older house near Holy Trinity Church, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. If you live in a flat close to Dalston Junction station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.
Dalston is in the London Borough of Hackney, about 1 mile south of Shoreditch. We can visit homes in Dalston on weekdays, or on a Saturday by prior arrangement. Our Hackney coverage includes Dalston, along with the rest of the borough.
In E8, N1 and N16, the process is the same as anywhere else in London. Streets in the area include Glebe Road, Forest Road and Boleyn Road, and we cover homes on all of them for TV and media units. Dalston sits close to the A107 and A1207. If your home is on one of them, tell us during the design visit, as some main roads have strict stopping rules. Other places close to Dalston include Kingsland (1 mile west), De Beauvoir Town (1 mile west), Hackney Central (1 mile east), London Fields (1 mile south-east) and Shacklewell (1 mile north). Elsewhere in Hackney, we also cover Stamford Hill (2 miles north), Upper Clapton (2 miles north), Manor House (2 miles north-west), Lea Bridge (2 miles north-east) and Hackney Marshes (2 miles north-east).

Common questions about TV and media units
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Dalston Junction station?
Yes. We cover all of Hackney and the rest of London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Should I send photos?
Yes, they help. Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, especially with rough measurements. To send them, use our contact form.
Who chooses the colour?
The choice is yours, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you’ve chosen.
How long will the fitting take?
How long fitting takes depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We’ll explain what fitting day involves before we start.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
We need access, so someone has to let us in. You do not need to watch us work.
Could you do it yourself?
Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it is quick to buy.
Is it time for TV and media units?
Most people come to us because of the cables. Leads trail from the TV to the boxes, the sockets and the speakers and nothing off the shelf hides them all. Built-in units give cables somewhere to go.
If any of these sound familiar, it’s worth getting in touch:
- Alcoves either side of the chimney breast going to waste
- Leads that show from every angle
- A TV stand that doesn’t fit the wall
- A cabinet that traps heat
Sutton House, about 0.9 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units.

Caring for painted furniture
Most of what helps is simple. What we’d suggest:
- Check each box’s guidance on ventilation and clearances
- List every box, console and speaker that needs a home
- Plan any new sockets with your electrician before fitting
- Let us know about parking and access during the design visit
When you change equipment, use the cable routes we planned instead of making new ones. It keeps the unit tidy.
Keep heavy speakers and amplifiers on lower shelves, with the weight spread across shelves.
