Oval TV and Media Units
In Oval, we design TV and media units around the room you actually have. Your TV unit is designed at a visit to your home and built in our workshop.
- Boxes with no ventilation
- Clutter around the TV
- A TV that looks out of place in the room

Flats, blocks and rented homes
If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, and that’s best sorted before fitting day. We can’t advise on your lease, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.
For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

Speakers need their own thought. A soundbar can sit on a shelf below the screen, while larger speakers suit open shelves at the sides. Speakers work best in the open rather than behind closed doors, so we leave open bays for them. Most enquiries start with boxes with no ventilation and games, controllers and remotes everywhere, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
In a mansion block flat, ceilings are often tall and the walls are rarely straight, whereas newer blocks are more likely to have plasterboard partitions. Most households around Oval live in purpose-built flats, old or new, so we check what each wall is made of before planning TV and media units. Tall pieces are fixed back securely, whichever wall it is.
A quote in writing follows the design visit. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish, so it is clear what’s included.

Looking after your furniture
Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after. A few things help it stay looking good:
- Choose how the TV will sit before the design is finished
- Book your electrician first if sockets need to move
- Decide where you will sit, so the screen height suits it
- Mention parking and stairs when we visit
Painted finishes feel dry quickly but take longer to cure fully. For the first while, place equipment gently rather than sliding it, so the paint isn’t scuffed.
Leave any new socket or wiring work to your electrician, and do not daisy-chain adaptors.
Fitting day, step by step
However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and fitting day is where that happens. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Where there’s no lift, each section is sized to be carried up the stairs safely. The tightest landing sets the largest piece. Once inside, the sections are joined and fixed.
- You describe the TV wall and your equipment, from set-top boxes to speakers.
- A design visit follows, where we measure and agree the layout, with ventilation for boxes and amplifiers.
- A written quote follows. If anything in it is unclear, ask us.
- Once you are happy, the unit is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with cable routes planned in.
- We bring it to your home and fit it in place, with the cable routes left clear.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
- Let us know where the boiler and meters are
- Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
Arranging a design visit
The quote is built from the design visit. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and go through the design with you. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing, so you can take your time with it. To arrange the visit, send us a few details through our contact form.
Advice
Your questions about TV and media units in Oval
Can you make TV and media units for a home in Oval?
Yes, Oval is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Lambeth and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, and then we send a quote.
I live in a flat in Oval. How will the furniture get up the stairs?
We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, by prior arrangement. Tell us when you contact us if a Saturday suits you best.
How long will the fitting take?
It depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. The making happens in our workshop, so the time in your home is mostly fitting and finishing.
Do you move sockets for a TV unit?
Electrical work is not something we do. Sockets and wiring are for your electrician. We share the layout so the sockets line up with the design.
How much will my TV unit cost?
It depends on the size, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish. We send a quote in writing after the design visit.
Flat-pack or bespoke?
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it’s quick to buy.
Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s normally a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Living-room storage in Oval
About 32% of the homes in the streets around Oval went up since 2000, and about 26% before 1919, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Oval include Church of St Mark (Grade II*), under half a mile east, and Herbert House (Grade II*), under half a mile north. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for example removing original joinery or fixing into it, can require listed building consent from the council. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. About 32% of homes around Oval were built since 2000, well above the figure for Lambeth as a whole, about 17%, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Newer homes often have stud walls and compact rooms, so fixings and sizes are planned with that in mind.
If your home is one of the older houses near Calvary Church of God in Christ, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. For families living near St Stephen's Church of England Primary School, TV and media units can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else.

Why people ask for TV and media units in Oval
Some want the TV to sit better in a period room. A built-in unit around the chimney breast lets it sit more quietly.
We are often asked to help with:
- Nowhere good for speakers
- A tangle of wires behind the TV
- Bought furniture that does not suit the room
- Set-top boxes stacked on a stand
The wider area includes historic houses such as Buckingham Palace, about 1.7 miles north-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.
