Need loft storage in Elmers End?

Is bespoke worth it?

Standard furniture does not allow for the insulation and ventilation behind the eaves. We plan the storage around what’s behind the knee wall. It helps keep the space in good order. In an extended or opened-up house, old and new walls often meet slightly out of line, which shows up against standard furniture. Fitted pieces are scribed to both.

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You’ll see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

Why us?

About our loft storage in Elmers End

Loft stairs are often narrow and steep, with tight turns. At the design visit, we measure the stairs and landings as well as the loft, so every section built in our workshop fits up the stairs. It is a step that matters for any loft in Elmers End. If your home has a new loft conversion that needs storage and a loft room that doubles as an office or guest room, eaves cupboards made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand can solve it.

Around Elmers End, with interwar houses or semis making up much of the housing, the hallway may be wider than in a Victorian terrace, with room for a cupboard by the door. Bay windows suit seating with drawers or lift-up lids, with a grille where there’s a radiator underneath. Eaves cupboards are measured and made for the house you have.

After the design visit, we send you a quote in writing. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so it is clear what’s included.

How fitting day works

Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the shape of the room and the number of cupboards and drawers, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand helps the day run well. Fitting day starts with protecting the floors and setting out the pieces. Each piece is levelled, scribed where the wall wanders and fixed to suit the wall.

  1. You tell us about the loft room.
  2. We come to measure and talk through the design and finish.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. We make the cupboards and drawers in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The storage is fitted and scribed to the slopes, and any hand painting is done on site.
  6. Go easy on new paintwork while it cures; hand-painted surfaces are easy to touch up later.

What affects the price in Elmers End

The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. That depends on:

  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • Parking near your home
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • How square the room is

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We’ll talk through what you need inside at the measuring visit, and the quote follows.

What to send when you get in touch

Ahead of the design visit, we’ll normally ask about:

  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Examples of the look you’re after
  • Where you live, with the postcode

Rough measurements are fine at the start. We measure everything properly at the measuring visit. To arrange it, drop us a line using the contact form with a few details about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

Do you need loft storage in Elmers End?

Most people get in touch because the eaves are going to waste. Behind the knee walls, there is space nobody can reach. Cupboards and drawers built into the knee wall put it to work.

Some of the things we are asked to solve include:

  • No wardrobe that fits under the slope
  • Unused space in a dormer
  • Low eaves that nobody can use
  • Boxes piled on loft boards

For an older house near St James's Church, eaves cupboards in a converted loft are scribed to slopes that are rarely even.

Before you choose who makes it

  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • How parking will work on your street

Flats, conversions and lettings

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways not just the room, so each section is sized to get through.

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, after measuring the route at the design visit.

Loft storage in Elmers End: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Elmers End were built before 1919 (about 39%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 34%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. About 44% of households around Elmers End live in terraced houses, well above the figure for Croydon as a whole, about 23%, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. Narrow halls and stairs in terraces mean the furniture comes in sections. About 44% of households in the streets around Elmers End live in terraced houses, the 2021 Census shows. Many London terraces have converted lofts with eaves that can take storage.

Close to Winsford Gardens? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and eaves cupboards can give those things a place. For a family home near Marian Vian Primary School, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up.

Questions we are often asked

Is Elmers End in the area you cover for loft storage?

Yes, we work across Croydon, Elmers End included, and across the rest of London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Elmers End?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

Should I send photos?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit, along with rough sizes. Show anything the furniture has to work around, like radiators or sockets.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need it. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

Will cupboards in the eaves stop air moving?

A good design avoids that. We look behind the knee wall during the design visit and plan the storage so air can still move. Insulation and ventilation work itself is not ours.

Can a wardrobe follow a sloping ceiling?

Yes. The wardrobe follows the angle of the ceiling, with hanging where there is height. It uses the full height of the room. We plan it during the design visit.
