Farnborough TV and Media Units

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make TV and media units for homes in Farnborough, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • Games, controllers and remotes everywhere
  • A TV that looks out of place in the room
  • Alcoves either side of the chimney breast going to waste

About our TV and media units in Farnborough

A built-in TV wall often needs sockets in new places, behind the screen or inside a cupboard. That’s work for your electrician, and Part P of the Building Regulations covers some electrical work in homes. It is best done before we fit. Typical reasons to get in touch are equipment with nowhere proper to go and alcoves either side of the chimney breast going to waste, and the answer is made in our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

A house from between the wars normally has lower ceilings than a Victorian one, so TV and media units are proportioned to the room rather than copied from a taller one. Where your home is one of the interwar houses or semis that are a big part of the housing around Farnborough, the cornice may be plain or missing, so the furniture can run straight to the ceiling. Any skirting is cut around neatly.

Everything we agree at the measuring visit goes into the written quote: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Why people ask for TV and media units in Farnborough

In an open-plan space, the TV wall is on show from everywhere. A built-in unit gives that wall order.

If you recognise any of these, it is worth talking to us:

  • Standard units leaving gaps
  • Games, controllers and remotes everywhere
  • A tangle of wires behind the TV
  • A big screen that dominates the wall

If your children go to Farnborough Primary School or a school nearby, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room.

Before you choose who makes it

  • How parking will work on your street
  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done

Questions from Farnborough

Do you cover homes near Orpington station?

Yes. We cover all of Bromley and the rest of London. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with a few details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Will a conservation area stop me having TV and media units fitted in Farnborough?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, by arrangement. Let us know when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

It can be done with some care: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. Damp treatment is not something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

Can you add sockets behind the TV?

That’s a job for your electrician. It’s best done before the unit goes in and we design the cable routes around the sockets.

Is there room for a soundbar?

Speakers sound better in the open than shut in a cupboard. A shelf under the TV suits a soundbar, and larger speakers suit open shelves at the sides. Bring the sizes to the design visit.

Bespoke TV and media units or ready-made?

Bought units often have a single cable gap, but the wires still show between the stand, the wall and the screen. We plan the cable routes into the design, with access panels for changes later. Standard widths rarely add up to the length of a real wall, which fitted furniture avoids. It can also go up to the ceiling rather than stopping short.

In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. Let us know about parking at the measuring visit, so it can be planned.

How fitting works for TV and media units

The last stage of the day is the finish. With a spray finish from the workshop, there is usually only filling and touching up to do in the room; hand painting, if that’s what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Semis and detached houses often have a front path or a side gate, which can make carrying in easier. Gates, paths and steps up to the door are part of the route we measure. Floors, stairs and doorways are protected on the way in.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about the room and your equipment.
  2. We visit to measure the wall and discuss the design. New sockets or wiring are for your electrician, so it helps to have them in mind early.
  3. We send a written quote for the unit.
  4. The unit is built in our workshop, with openings for cables and air.
  5. We fit it in your home, with the cable routes ready to use.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths.

Living-room storage in Farnborough

Homes built between 1973 and 1999 make up about 31% of the housing in the area around Farnborough, with about 27% built between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That matters for TV and media units, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. The Farnborough Village Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Farnborough. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. The ULEZ, run by TfL, takes in all of London, so Bromley is inside it. So any van that delivers or fits furniture in Farnborough is covered by it. We go through parking and access at the design visit.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St Giles the Abbot, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. For an older house near Church of St Giles the Abbot, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at.

Flats, leases and landlords

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. We choose fixings to suit the wall, which we check during the design visit.
