TV and media units in Crofton

Media equipment warms up as it runs, so equipment can’t simply be shut in a closed cupboard. Ventilation is planned into the design, with open backs, gaps or vented doors where they’re needed. Equipment makers often say how much space their boxes need around them. Typical reasons to get in touch are speakers muffled behind doors and a tangle of wires behind the TV, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

In a semi from the 1920s or 1930s, the front room typically has a bay at one end and a chimney breast on the side wall. Around Crofton, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a big part of the housing, so that layout is worth knowing well. We tend to plan TV and media units along the chimney breast wall so the bay keeps its light.

After the design visit, we send you a quote in writing. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so it’s clear what’s included.

What TV and media units cannot fix

Before you plan the job, it helps to know what we don’t do:

  • Plastering or decorating around the unit
  • Any electrical work (your electrician handles that, and Part P covers some of it)
  • Aerial, satellite or broadband installation

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can fill in our short enquiry form and we will give you a straight answer. Our process from visit to fitting.

What goes into it

  • Spray-painted finish
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Birch plywood
  • Ventilated cabinets
  • Cable routes

Bespoke TV and media units or ready-made?

An off-the-shelf TV stand is cheaper and quick to buy. A stand is also simple to swap when technology moves on, which is a fair point in its favour. A built-in unit is planned for your room and your equipment. Even in a 1930s house, walls and floors aren’t perfectly true, so standalone furniture can still lean or leave gaps. Fitted furniture is scribed and levelled on site.

Every room is priced on its own, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

Why us?

  • Built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
  • Over 300 projects completed

FAQs: TV and media units in Crofton

Is Crofton in the area you cover for TV and media units?

Yes, Crofton is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Bromley and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

Do you cover homes near Orpington station?

Yes. We cover all of Bromley and the rest of London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with a few details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work.

How long does it take to fit a TV unit?

How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We will explain what fitting day involves before we start.

Does the unit work if the TV is on a bracket?

The unit can be planned either way. If the TV is wall-mounted, panels and shelves are arranged around the bracket and cables, and if it stands on the unit we size the top for it.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Just mention it when you contact us.

Built-in living-room furniture in Crofton

About 57% of the homes in the streets around Crofton went up between 1945 and 1972, and about 31% between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Within a mile of the centre of Crofton, 4 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. More than half of the homes in the streets around Crofton (about 57%) were built between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Post-war rooms tend to be simple shapes, often without a chimney breast, so a full wall of TV and media units is often the answer, fixed to suit the wall, which may be concrete or block.

Living in a block of flats near Orpington station? Then each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Crofton Court, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so let us know about it at the design visit.

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, as it makes good use of an awkward room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray or hand-painted finish.

What prompts TV and media units in Crofton

Some want the TV to sit better in a period room. Building it into the alcoves or around the chimney breast makes it part of the room.

These come up often when people first get in touch:

  • A screen at the wrong height
  • A tangle of wires behind the TV
  • Somewhere to keep games tidy
  • Nowhere good for speakers

If your children go to Crofton Infant School or a school nearby, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done

What happens on fitting day

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. Most of the decisions were made at the measuring visit and set out in your quote, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving the room tidy. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch about a built-in TV unit.
  2. We visit to measure and discuss the design and how the unit should look in the room.
  3. You get a written quote covering the design, the materials and the finish.
  4. We build the unit in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood; a spray-painted finish is applied there for a smooth, even surface.
  5. The unit is fitted and scribed to the walls, and any hand painting is done in the room.

How to prepare

  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Empty the space we’ll be working in
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

Starting with a design visit

A quote begins with a few details from you: the room, rough measurements and some pictures if you have them. To send them, send us a few details through our contact form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.
