TV and media units for homes in Norbury

Speakers need space to be heard properly. A soundbar typically sits just below the TV, while larger speakers suit open shelves at the sides. Closing speakers in a cupboard muffles them, so we plan open spaces for them. If you’re living with bought furniture that doesn’t suit the room and a TV that looks out of place in the room, that’s what TV and media units are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

A house from between the wars typically has lower ceilings than a Victorian one, and the proportions of TV and media units are set to match. Where your home is one of the interwar houses or semis that are a big part of the housing around Norbury, there may be little or no cornice, which lets the furniture run straight up to the ceiling. The skirting is scribed around neatly.

Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made at our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Living-room storage in Norbury

Homes built before 1919 make up about 43% of the housing in the streets around Norbury, with about 34% built between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. 5 conservation areas have at least part of their area less than a mile from the middle of Norbury. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Strict stopping rules apply on red routes, which TfL runs. If you live on or close to a main road in Norbury, let us know during the design visit. That way we can plan where to load and unload.

If you live near Grangewood Park, TV and media units can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it. If you live in a flat close to Norbury station, TV and media units are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. For a family home near Kensington Avenue Primary School, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room.

Norbury is in the London Borough of Croydon, about 1 mile south of Thornton Heath. Anywhere in Norbury, it works the same way: we visit and measure, send a written quote, make the furniture in our workshop and fit it. Our work takes in places right across Croydon, large and small.

Every home in CR7, SW16 and SE19 is within our area for TV and media units. You’ll find streets here like Green Lane, Croft Road and Downs Road, and homes on each of them are within our area for TV and media units. Other places close to Norbury include Pollards Hill (1 mile north), Thornton Heath (1 mile south), Streatham (2 miles north-west), Streatham Park (2 miles north-west) and Mitcham (2 miles west). Across the rest of Croydon, our area takes in Croydon (3 miles south), Coulsdon (7 miles south), Purley (5 miles south), Broad Green (2 miles south), Selhurst (2 miles south-east) and South Norwood (2 miles south-east).

For a walk, there’s Biggin Wood.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job.

How fitting works for TV and media units

There is not much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and the room should already be cleared, as agreed at the measuring visit. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand helps the day run well. On the day, we cover the floors first, then bring the sections in. The pieces are levelled, fitted to the walls and fixed back.

  1. You get in touch about a built-in TV unit.
  2. We visit to measure and talk through the design and how the unit should look in the room.
  3. A quote in writing follows, with the finish set out.
  4. The unit is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF, which takes paint well, and birch plywood.
  5. The unit is fitted and scribed to the walls, and any hand painting is done in the room.

Before we arrive

  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Empty the space we will be working in

Getting a quote

The quote is built from the design visit. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and talk through the design with you. A quote in writing follows the visit. To book one, use our contact form.

Advice

How it’s made

Plinths and scribe strips

A plinth lifts the unit and takes up an uneven floor. It can line up with the skirting.

Birch plywood

Long shelves under a screen need to stay straight. Birch plywood, sized for the span, keeps it flat.

Questions we’re often asked

Is parking a problem for fitting in Norbury?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the design visit.

Do you cover homes near Norbury station?

Yes, homes across Croydon and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with some details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You do. The paint colour is agreed with you, and it is set out in the quote.

Can a built-in unit hide all the wires?

That’s the aim, and it’s planned from the start. Routes, openings and removable panels let you add or change leads later without taking the unit apart. If the TV is wall-mounted, we plan a route behind the screen.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need it. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

Do you move sockets for a TV unit?

Your electrician does that. Ideally it’s done before fitting.

How we price TV and media units

The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. That depends on:

  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • The width and height of the space
  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, which the quote allows for. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit.

What to send when you contact us

When you contact us, these help most:

  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any

Getting a quote starts with some details: the room, rough sizes and some photos if you have them. To send them, message us from the contact page. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

Where other trades come in

Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. In practice, that means:

  • Setting up and tuning the TV, boxes and speakers
  • Moving sockets or adding new wiring, which is for your electrician
  • Plastering or decorating around the unit

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can get in touch through our contact form and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.
