TV and media units in Old Ford

Media equipment warms up as it runs, so sealing equipment in a cupboard is not a good idea. We plan ventilation into the unit. It’s worth checking each maker’s guidance on clearances. People normally come to us about equipment running hot in a closed cupboard and games, controllers and remotes everywhere; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Many homes around Old Ford were built since 2000, and newer homes rarely come with any built-in shelving or media storage. TV and media units can be planned around where the sockets and aerial points already are, with routes for cables designed in. Plasterboard on studs takes fitted furniture well, as long as the fixings suit it.

The furniture is made at our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it is easy to buy.

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

FAQs: TV and media units in Old Ford

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Old Ford?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Hackney Wick station?

Yes. We cover all of Tower Hamlets and the rest of London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.

Can a built-in unit hide all the wires?

Cable routes are built into the design. Where the cables meet the wall depends on where the sockets are.

Can you add sockets behind the TV?

That’s a job for your electrician. It is best done before the unit goes in, and we plan cut-outs and cable routes around the sockets.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.

Where should speakers go in a TV unit?

Speakers work best in open spaces rather than behind doors. A shelf under the TV suits a soundbar with open bays for bigger speakers. Bring the sizes to the design visit.

What we don’t do

We do not treat damp or carry out building work, so these points are worth knowing:

  • Connecting the TV signal or internet
  • Taking out a fireplace or chimney breast
  • Painting the walls and ceiling

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can use our contact form and we will give you a straight answer. How a job runs, step by step.

What goes into it

  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Cable routes
  • Ventilated cabinets

Pricing TV and media units in Old Ford

Not every room costs the same, for these reasons:

  • The number of doors and drawers
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room

There is no price list, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a quote in writing. To start, fill in our short enquiry form.

What we need to know

What helps most when you first contact us:

  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on

Rough sizes are fine at the start. We measure everything properly at the design visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To arrange it, fill in our short enquiry form. The written quote follows the visit.

TV and media units for homes in Old Ford

In the neighbourhood around Old Ford, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 49%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 16%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). That matters for TV and media units, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. The National Heritage List has 29 entries within half a mile of the centre of Old Ford. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of inner London. That normally means a van in Old Ford needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council. We ask about parking during the design visit, so the van can be planned for.

If your home is one of the older houses near St Paul Old Ford, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at. Close to Grove Hall Park? A room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone.

What happens on fitting day

Once the main sections are fixed in place, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly. The time the fitting takes depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Before fixing into a stud wall, we check for pipes and cables, and heavy pieces are fixed into the studs or stand on the floor. Any new sockets or plumbing are for your electrician or plumber.

  1. To begin, use our contact form; a brief note on the TV wall and everything that plugs into it is plenty.
  2. We visit to measure up, note where the sockets are and plan how the cables will run. If you need new sockets, your electrician should do that before fitting.
  3. A quote in writing follows for the unit.
  4. The unit is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with cable openings and vents cut in.
  5. The unit is fitted and scribed to the walls, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish and the routes left clear.

Preparing the room

  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are

Getting a quote

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we have measured up and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

What prompts TV and media units in Old Ford

Boxes, consoles and routers on the floor are a familiar sight. A media unit gives each box its own ventilated space.

Here’s what TV and media units can help with:

  • Space for a soundbar and speakers
  • A big screen that dominates the wall
  • Somewhere to keep games tidy
  • Equipment running hot in a closed cupboard

For a flat near Hackney Wick station, the route in is measured along with the room itself, and the sections are sized to fit it.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
  • Have they thought about parking near you?
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
