TV and media units in Fish Island: what you get

In a room with a chimney breast, the alcoves either side are natural places for media storage. Cupboards and shelves in the alcoves can hold the boxes, speakers and books leaving the TV in an alcove or on the breast. We keep any vent in the chimney breast clear. Most enquiries start with leads that show from every angle and standard units leaving gaps; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

A large number of homes around Fish Island date from 2000 onwards, and in London many homes of that age are flats in newer blocks. In a compact new-build room, a shallower run of TV and media units can add storage without crowding the space. Boxing for pipes and risers is common in newer homes, and the furniture can be designed around it.

Everything we agree during the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

Living-room carpentry in Fish Island: local notes

About 49% of the homes in the streets around Fish Island went up since 2000, and about 22% between 1973 and 1999, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Within a mile of the centre of Fish Island, 11 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Purpose-built flats are home to about 71% of households in the streets around Fish Island, according to Census 2021. For a flat, TV and media units are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.

Near listed buildings like Church of St Mary of Eton, about 0.5 miles north-west of the centre of Fish Island, older homes may keep original joinery that TV and media units can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. Living in a block of flats near Hackney Wick station? Then each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. If your home is one of the older houses near St Mary of Eton, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at.

From workshop to your room

You will not need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared. After that, it’s over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long the fitting takes depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Fitting day starts by covering floors and setting out the sections. Each piece is levelled and fixed to suit plasterboard or block. Hand-painted finishes can be completed once the furniture is in.

  1. You contact us with a short note about the room and the unit you have in mind.
  2. We visit to measure the wall and go through the design. New sockets or wiring are for your electrician, so it helps to have them in mind early.
  3. You receive a written quote setting out the unit, materials and finish, ready for you to check.
  4. Each section is built in our workshop to the measurements we took, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We install the unit, leaving the cable routes and vents clear. We check the doors and shelves with you before we leave.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are

Ask for a quote

Getting a quote starts with a few details: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of pictures if you can take them. To send them, tell us about the room on our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and go through the design, then send a quote in writing.

Advice

Flats, leases and landlords

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. An agent can arrange access for you.

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations. We cannot advise on your lease, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Screen sizes change, and a stand that suits today’s set may look small with the next. We can plan the opening with a bigger screen in mind if you expect to upgrade. Rooms in newer homes are often compact, and standard depths can take too much floor, whereas fitted pieces can be as shallow as the space needs. It can still go to the ceiling.

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size comes first. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

FAQs: TV and media units in Fish Island

Will a conservation area stop me having TV and media units fitted in Fish Island?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

I live in a flat in Fish Island. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It’s useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Will my boxes get too hot inside the unit?

Media equipment runs warm and needs airflow. We design open backs, gaps or vents where it sits. Keep the vents clear once it is in use.

Do pictures help?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit, along with rough measurements. It helps to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

How long are you in the house for fitting?

The time the fitting takes depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We’ll explain what fitting day involves before we start.

How is the price worked out?

Every job is priced for its room: the size, what goes inside, the finish and how square the room is all count. The written quote follows the design visit.

Pricing TV and media units in Fish Island

When we put a quote together, we consider:

  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • How big the furniture is
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • Parking and unloading on your street

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

What we need to know

The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. It is useful to include:

  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Examples of the look you are after

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, once the room is measured and the design talked through. To arrange a visit, use our contact form.

Looking after your furniture

Looking after painted furniture is simple. A few things help it stay looking good:

  • Measure your TV, or the size you expect to buy next
  • Book your electrician first if sockets need to move
  • Count your equipment, including routers and consoles
  • Let us know about parking and access at the measuring visit

When you change equipment, use the cable routes we planned. It keeps the unit tidy.

Do not let clutter build up against the unit’s vents.
