TV and media units in Shadwell

Speakers need their own thought. A soundbar can sit on a shelf below the screen. Closing speakers in a cupboard muffles them, so we plan open spaces for them. People usually come to us about somewhere to keep games tidy and a TV that looks out of place in the room, and the answer is made in our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

In a block of flats, the stairs, lift and doors decide how big each section can be. Since most households around Shadwell live in purpose-built flats, TV and media units are designed in sections from the start, with the route in measured as well as the room. The joins are placed where they will not show once the furniture is fitted.

Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made at our workshop. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

How fitting day works

In older rooms, the furniture typically has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Parking near blocks of flats can be limited, and loading may need planning, so tell us about bays, permits or any loading area at the design visit. Once inside, the sections are joined and fixed with fixings that suit the wall. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. You send us a note about the room and the unit you’d like.
  2. At the design visit we agree the layout and talk about colour and finish.
  3. A quote in writing follows, with the finish set out.
  4. We build the unit in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood; a spray-painted finish is applied there for a smooth, even surface.
  5. We fit it in your home; a hand-painted finish is applied once it’s in and is easy to touch up later.

How to prepare

  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Empty the space we will be working in
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to

Ask for a quote

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we’ve measured up and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Advice

Is bespoke worth it?

Bought units often have a single cable gap, but the wires still show between the stand, the wall and the screen. We plan the cable routes into the design, with access left for later changes. Large ready-made pieces can be hard to get up the stairs or into the lift, while fitted furniture arrives in sections sized for the route. It is then put together in the room.

How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Looking after your furniture

None of this takes much effort. What we’d suggest:

  • Note which boxes need line of sight for their remotes
  • Think about whether you will upgrade the screen
  • Check where the seating will go
  • Tell us about parking and access at the measuring visit

Doors can settle a little once the unit is in use. Most hinges can be adjusted to bring a door back in line.

Keep ventilation gaps and open backs clear when you add equipment.

TV and media units for homes in Shadwell

About 35% of the homes in the streets around Shadwell went up between 1973 and 1999, and about 28% since 2000, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how TV and media units are fixed and fitted. There are 74 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Shadwell. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. The ULEZ, run by TfL, takes in all of London, so Tower Hamlets is inside it. It applies to the vans that deliver and fit furniture in Shadwell, as it does anywhere else in London. Parking and access are planned during the design visit.

For families living near Peter Hills with St Mary's and St Paul's CofE Primary School, TV and media units can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else. If your home is one of the older houses near St Paul's Church, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. The wider area includes historic houses such as Mansion House, about 1.9 miles west. For a period home anywhere nearby, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at.

Spray-painted finish

The unit arrives already finished. Treat it gently while the paint cures fully.

Questions from Shadwell

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Shadwell?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking during the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Wapping station?

Yes. We cover all of Tower Hamlets and the rest of London. To get started, you can use our contact form with some details about the room.

Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?

It’s something we deal with all the time. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth, so there are no gaps at the sides.

Can you plan for a future TV?

If you are likely to upgrade, we can leave room for it. It’s useful to know the size you are thinking of.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

We need someone to let us in at the start of the day. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

Is there room for a soundbar?

Speakers sound better in the open than shut in a cupboard. A soundbar can sit on a shelf below the screen. Bring the sizes to the design visit.

What we don’t do

We’d rather be clear about where our work stops:

  • Configuring the TV and sound system
  • Connecting the TV signal or internet
  • Any electrical work (your electrician handles that, and Part P covers some of it)

Not sure whether your space suits TV and media units? You can tell us about the room on our contact form and we will tell you before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.
