About our loft storage in The Hale

Behind the short walls at the edge of a loft room, there is often space going to waste. Cupboards and drawers set into the knee wall make that space useful. Drawers bring the back of the space within reach. At the design visit in The Hale, we’ll see what fits. People normally come to us about seasonal things cluttering the loft room and a loft room that still feels unfinished, and the answer is made in our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Coats, shoes, bags and the vacuum cleaner all need somewhere to go in a family house. With interwar houses, semis and detached homes a large part of the housing around The Hale, fitted storage near the front door can take much of it. Meters and fuse boards stay easy to reach.

You get the quote in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and share it with anyone else involved. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Common questions about loft storage

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in The Hale?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Do you make loft storage for homes in The Hale?

Yes, The Hale is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Barnet and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, followed by a quote.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two options: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. Your quote sets out which you have chosen.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Let us know when you first get in touch.

Should I send pictures?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, particularly with rough sizes. You can send them when you drop us a line using the contact form.

Do you move sockets or add lighting?

No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician. We’ll design around them.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. We choose fixings to suit the wall.

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Tell us about them during the design visit, and we will plan the fitting around them.

The Hale homes and loft storage

The biggest shares of homes in the area around The Hale were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 58%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 14%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how eaves cupboards are fixed and fitted. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of The Hale include John Keble Church (Grade II), less than half a mile south. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. Strict stopping rules apply on red routes, which TfL runs. If your home in The Hale is on or near a main road, tell us at the measuring visit. We’ll plan where the van can stop.

Close to Stoneyfields Park? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and eaves cupboards can give those things a place. If your children go to Mathilda Marks-Kennedy Jewish Primary School or a school nearby, eaves cupboards can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit.

What happens on fitting day

On the morning of the fitting, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. The sections built in our workshop come in next, one at a time. How long fitting takes depends on how much storage you want in the loft, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so any section going up there is sized for them. Elsewhere in the house, the route is normally more generous. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.

  1. You let us know about the loft room.
  2. We come to measure and talk through the design and finish.
  3. A written quote follows.
  4. We make the cupboards and drawers in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in the loft and check each door and drawer with you.
  6. Go easy on new paintwork while it cures; hand-painted surfaces are easy to touch up later.

Before we arrive

  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings

Related advice

Is it time for loft storage?

Loft rooms that double as offices or guest rooms need places for things. Built-in storage under the slopes keeps the room flexible.

If any of these sound familiar, it’s worth getting in touch:

  • Furniture that cannot get up to the loft
  • A dormer that isn’t being used
  • Needing storage in a loft office
  • A boarded loft with no proper shelving

For a flat near Mill Hill Broadway station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • How they handle walls that aren’t straight
  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • A written quote that sets out the job
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

How it’s made

Plinths and scribe strips

In a loft room, walls, slopes and floors are rarely straight. Scribe strips and a plinth take up the difference. That keeps the lines neat all round.

Spray-painted finish

A spray-painted finish is smooth and even. It is done in our workshop before fitting. The colour is agreed with you.

Tips worth knowing

The finish lasts best with a little care. These practical tips help:

  • Note how narrow the loft stairs are
  • Let us know about parking near your home
  • Count the clothes you’ll need to hang
  • Choose a calm colour for the loft

When we have finished fitting, the cupboards and drawers are ready. New paintwork takes time to cure fully, so go easy on it to begin with. Keep tape and strong cleaners away from it while it settles.

Avoid overloading drawers so they keep running smoothly. It helps to clear out now and then. Keep the heaviest things near the floor.
