About our bespoke kitchens in Balham

Kitchens in period houses bring their own challenges. Few walls are flat, and floors often fall away from the walls, sometimes noticeably over a single run of units. We scribe the cabinets to the walls and set them level on adjustable feet or a plinth, so the worktop you choose can sit level. Typical reasons to get in touch are cabinets for a narrow kitchen and tall larder storage; the furniture is made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Wall cabinets need firm fixings, and older internal walls can be lath and plaster rather than brick. Since a large share of homes around Balham are that old, we check each wall before wall cabinets are planned. If a wall cannot take wall cabinets, tall larders or a dresser standing on the floor can do the job.

A written quote follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you’re getting.

Looking after your furniture

Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it is worth looking after. A few pointers help:

  • Pick the oven, fridge and dishwasher first
  • Treat new paintwork gently at first
  • Think about how you cook and what you store
  • Let us know how parking works on your street

New paintwork takes a while to harden after fitting. Treat the doors and drawer fronts gently at first, and wipe them with a soft, damp cloth. In time, mild soapy water and a soft cloth keep them clean.

Talk to your plumber, electrician and a Gas Safe engineer early. The pipes, cables and gas supply need to suit the layout, and it’s easier when everyone works from the same design.

Fitting day, step by step

Fitting day follows a set order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on how many units there are and how the room is laid out, and your quote sets out the fitting days. If your hall still has its original tiles or boards, they’re covered before any carrying starts. Drilling into lath and plaster is done with care, so the plaster around stays sound. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.

  1. You get in touch and describe the kitchen you want.
  2. At the design visit we plan the kitchen and talk about colours and finish.
  3. A written quote follows, with the finish agreed.
  4. The cabinets are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, and a spray finish is applied there for a smooth, even surface.
  5. The kitchen is fitted and scribed to the walls, with any hand painting done in the room.
  6. Treat new paint gently while it cures; the plumbing, gas and electrics are done by your own plumber, an engineer on the Gas Safe Register and your electrician.

Before fitting day

  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician beforehand
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone

How to get a quote

We quote once we have seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. To book a design visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Advice

Bespoke kitchens for homes in Balham

About 64% of the homes in the area around Balham went up before 1919, and about 9% between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That matters for kitchens, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Balham include Church of St Mary (Grade II), less than half a mile south-west, and The Bedford Hotel (Grade II), under half a mile east. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features like panelling may need listed building consent. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. Around Balham, about 64% of homes date from before 1919, well above the figure for Wandsworth as a whole, about 44%, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. So older-house details are more likely to come into the design of kitchens.

If your children go to Ravenstone Primary School or a school nearby, planning a kitchen around family routines, with a place for school things, pays off. If you live near Wandsworth Common, a tall cupboard for outdoor things can be part of the kitchen design. Carlyle's House, about 2.9 miles north, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, a narrow back addition or an old chimney breast may shape the kitchen layout.

Flats, conversions and lettings

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Tell us about it when you get in touch.

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, after measuring the route during the design visit.

What affects the price in Balham

Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. What affects it comes down to:

  • How square the room is
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • Spray painting or hand painting

Access to the room makes a difference too. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, which the quote allows for. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit.

What we need to know

You do not need exact measurements or a plan. It is enough to send:

  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling

To make a start, tell us about the room on our contact form and tell us a little about the room and roughly what you’d like. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and send you a quote in writing afterwards.

What bespoke kitchens can’t fix

Some parts of a job need another trade, such as an electrician, a plumber or an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. Here’s what to know:

  • Building work, like removing walls
  • Wiring for appliances and lights
  • Painting the walls around the kitchen

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can fill in our short enquiry form and we’ll give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How it works.

Common questions about bespoke kitchens

My home in Balham is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. Kitchens are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Do you make bespoke kitchens for homes in Balham?

Yes, we work across Wandsworth, Balham included, and across the rest of London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You do. The paint colour is agreed with you before anything is painted.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

It needs a little planning: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

What are your kitchens made from?

MDF for smooth painted parts and birch plywood for drawer boxes and shelves. We spray paint in the workshop or hand paint, in colours you choose.

Can I send pictures ahead of the visit?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough measurements. Show anything the furniture has to work around, like radiators or sockets.
