Under-stairs storage in Millbank

About our under-stairs storage in Millbank

Where the space under the stairs opens onto a room, a compact desk can fit beneath it. We can build a desk with shelves above and a drawer or two below. Any new socket or light there is for your electrician, and we leave room and a route for the cable. It is worth talking through at the design visit in Millbank. Typical reasons to get in touch are wanting a quiet corner for paperwork and a fuse board that’s hard to get to, and the answer is made in our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Where original shutters, doors or panelling survive, they’re worth designing around. Around Millbank, where homes from before 1919 make up a large share, fitted storage can be designed to sit alongside them. Door styles can be chosen to suit the age of the house, and painted to match. If your home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original joinery.

The quote comes in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and talk it over at home. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it’s quick to buy.

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.

How it is made

Spray-painted finish

For a crisp, even look, many people choose a spray-painted finish. We apply it in our workshop, and the paint needs time to cure fully once it is fitted.

Doors and drawer fronts

Doors and drawer fronts are made from moisture-resistant MDF and painted to your colour. Their edges are cut to follow the angle of the stairs, so the gaps stay even all the way along.

What happens on fitting day

Once the main sections are fixed in place, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly. The time the fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Parking on terraced streets can be tight, particularly in a controlled parking zone, so details of permits, bays and any loading restrictions help. Unloading is kept short, with sections taken straight inside. Saturday fitting can be arranged.

  1. To begin, get in touch through our contact form; a brief note on the space and what it holds now is plenty.
  2. At the design visit we measure the space and plan the storage around the meters, so readers and engineers can still reach them.
  3. You receive a written quote for the storage.
  4. The storage is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with access to the meters planned in.
  5. We fit it in your home, scribed to the stairs and the walls, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Before fitting day

  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager

Ask for a quote

Rough sizes are fine at the start. Everything is measured properly when we visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To get started, get in touch through our contact form. You receive a quote in writing after the visit.

Storage in Millbank homes: local notes

About 47% of the homes in the area around Millbank went up before 1919, and about 25% since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. The National Heritage List has 412 entries within half a mile of the centre of Millbank. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and under-stairs cupboards can be designed to work around them. Strict stopping rules apply on red routes, which TfL runs. If your home in Millbank is on or near a main road, tell us at the design visit. We can then plan where the van will stop.

Near listed buildings like London Underground Headquarters, less than half a mile west of the centre of Millbank, older homes may keep original joinery that under-stairs cupboards can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. If your home is one of the older houses near Christ Church, the cupboard door under a period staircase can be kept or replaced to match the new storage.

Why people ask for under-stairs storage in Millbank

When a home is short on storage, the space under the stairs is too useful to waste. Turned into proper storage, it can hold the everyday things that would otherwise fill the hallway. It also takes pressure off the other cupboards in the house.

A few of the things people ask us to solve are these:

  • A vacuum cleaner that has nowhere to go
  • An under-stairs cupboard full of clutter
  • A low corner too deep to reach into
  • Wanting a quiet corner for paperwork

For a family home near Harris Westminster Sixth Form, under-stairs cupboards can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room
  • A written quote that sets out the job
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • Real projects you can actually look at

How to choose a carpenter in London

What we don’t do

Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. That means:

  • Changing where a meter sits, which isn’t carpentry
  • Reshaping or rebuilding the staircase
  • Gas pipework, which needs a Gas Safe registered engineer

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer. How it works.

Questions from Millbank

My home in Millbank is a period house with walls that aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

Yes, that is normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

Will a conservation area stop me having under-stairs storage fitted in Millbank?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Is it possible to fit storage around a meter under the stairs?

Yes. Meters and fuse boards often sit under the stairs, and they need to stay accessible. We note them at the design visit and plan the drawers and doors around them. We don’t move meters, so the storage works around their current position.

Do you cover Millbank?

Yes, we do. We work in Millbank and across Westminster.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Just mention it when you get in touch.

Should I choose drawers or cupboards under the stairs?

Many designs use both. Drawers make the most of the low, deep end of the space, while a cupboard at the tall end takes coats, the vacuum or an ironing board. We talk it through at the measuring visit.
