Fitted home offices for your home in Hampstead
How we make fitted home offices for Hampstead
We make each home office in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood gives the desk and shelving their strength, while MDF takes paint well for the doors and panels. Once painted, by spray or by hand, it’s brought to your home in Hampstead and fitted. Most enquiries start with an alcove or landing that could take a desk and a room with two jobs to do; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.
Many Victorian and Edwardian houses have a bay window in the front room, while the recesses beside the chimney breast take shelving. If your home is one of the many around Hampstead built before 1919, a front room like that can become a study without losing its character. Each piece follows the walls rather than a straight line.
The written quote is your record of the job. It sets out the home office designed for your room, its materials and its finish.

What it is made from
Doors and drawer fronts
We make the fronts from moisture-resistant MDF and finish them in the colour you choose. Panels can echo the woodwork in an older room. The lines are kept neat and even.
Shelves
We can make fixed shelves, adjustable ones, or a mix. Fixed shelves add stiffness to tall units, while adjustable ones let you change things later.
Flats, blocks and rented homes
Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We can’t give advice on leases.
Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Let us know about it when you get in touch.
How we price fitted home offices
Not every room costs the same, for these reasons:
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
- Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
- The overall size of the piece
- The finish: spray painted or hand painted
We don’t publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a quote in writing. To arrange a design visit, get in touch through our contact form.
Helping us understand the room
When you contact us, these help most:
- Where you live, with the postcode
- Approximate measurements of the space
- Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and talk through the design with you, and the written quote comes after. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. To book a design visit, drop us a line using the contact form.
Fitting day, step by step
You will not need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and it’s useful to have the room cleared beforehand, as we will have talked about at the design visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. The time the fitting takes depends on how much desk, shelving and storage you want, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On fitting day, edges are trimmed on site to follow the walls, so a clear area to work in near the room helps. Dust is kept down and cleared up as we go. Hand painting, if that’s your finish, can follow the fitting.
- You get in touch with a few details about the room.
- At the design visit, we look at the room, the window and your equipment, and plan where the cables will run.
- A written quote follows, with the fitting days agreed.
- We make the desk, shelves and cupboards in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit it in your home and leave it ready for work.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture

FAQs: fitted home offices in Hampstead
Can you fit fitted home offices to the uneven walls of an older house in Hampstead?
Yes, that is normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.
How do you fit fitted home offices in a flat in Hampstead?
We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
How is the furniture painted?
There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.
Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?
External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.
What happens during the design visit?
We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and talk through the design with you. We’ll also ask about access and parking.
Do pictures help?
Yes, they help. Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, especially with rough sizes. You can send them when you fill in our short enquiry form.

Built-in desks and shelving in Hampstead
In the area around Hampstead, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 68%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 9%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. The National Heritage List has 363 entries within half a mile of the centre of Hampstead. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and home offices can be designed to work around them. About 42% of households in the area around Hampstead live in flats in converted or shared houses, based on Census 2021. Conversions often leave rooms in unusual shapes, with partition walls, boxed-in pipes and chimney breasts in odd places, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. A lease can require consent for alterations, so it’s worth checking yours first.
Close to Kilburn Grange Park? A desk facing a window makes the most of the daylight. Fenton House, about 0.4 miles north, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, a small back bedroom can become a home office with a desk under the window. For a flat near Finchley Road & Frognal station, home offices are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.

When is bespoke worth it?
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it is quick to buy.
A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.
