TV and Media Units in Hampstead
Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on TV and media units in Hampstead starts with a design visit, and everything is made in our workshop.
- A TV stand that does not fit the wall
- Leads that show from every angle
- Games, controllers and remotes everywhere
TV and media units in Hampstead
How we make TV and media units for Hampstead
In many period living rooms, the chimney breast and its two alcoves shape the whole wall. The alcoves can take cupboards for equipment and shelves above, with the TV in one alcove or on the chimney breast. We keep any vent in the chimney breast clear. We make TV and media units from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the things people most often want solved are empty alcoves beside the TV and games, controllers and remotes everywhere.
Picture rails, deep skirting boards and plaster cornices are part of the character of older houses, and TV and media units need to meet those lines neatly. Homes built before 1919 make up a large share of the housing around Hampstead, so those details are worth looking at closely during the design visit. The top of the furniture can stop at the picture rail or carry on to the cornice, whichever suits the room.
The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the TV unit we’ve designed for the room, its materials and its finish, and the workshop works from it.

Materials and finishes
Plinths and scribe strips
A plinth lifts the unit and takes up an uneven floor. It can line up with the skirting.
Moisture-resistant MDF
MDF has no grain to show through for a smooth finish. The moisture-resistant grade is our choice.
How fitting works for TV and media units
There is not much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and the room should already be cleared, as we will have talked about during the design visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On fitting day, edges are trimmed on site to follow the walls, so we ask for a clear space to work near the room. Dust is kept down and cleared up as we go. Hand painting, if that is your finish, can follow the fitting.
- You describe the TV wall and your equipment.
- We come to measure and talk through screen height, speakers and cables.
- A written quote follows. If anything in it is unclear, ask us.
- Once you’re happy, the unit is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We bring it to your home and fit it in place.
How to prepare
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
- Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone

When you need someone else
Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work aren’t part of what we do. Please bear these in mind too:
- Connecting the TV signal or internet
- Moving sockets or adding new wiring, which is for your electrician
- Setting up and tuning the TV, boxes and speakers
Not sure whether your space suits TV and media units? You can get in touch through our contact form and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

Flats, conversions and lettings
Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. We choose fixings to suit the wall, which we check during the design visit.
Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the measuring visit, and we will plan the fitting around them.
Your questions about TV and media units in Hampstead
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Finchley Road & Frognal station?
Yes. We cover all of Camden and the rest of London. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with a few details about the room.
Does a conservation area in or near Hampstead affect fitted furniture?
Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Who moves the sockets for a built-in TV wall?
We don’t do electrical work. Sockets and wiring are for your electrician, and Part P of the Building Regulations covers some electrical work in homes. We tell you where the unit will sit so the sockets end up in the right place.
Can you fit furniture on an external wall?
An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture, which helps avoid condensation and mould. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.
What if I buy a larger TV?
If you’re likely to upgrade, we can leave room for it. Tell us the size you have in mind.
Can the TV be wall-mounted with a unit around it?
We can plan for either a wall-mounted TV or one standing on the unit. For a wall-mounted TV, the layout works around the bracket position or we size the top for a TV that stands on it.

Living-room carpentry in Hampstead: local notes
Homes built before 1919 make up about 68% of the housing in the streets around Hampstead, with about 9% built between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. That matters for TV and media units, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Hampstead is partly covered by the Redington Frognall Conservation Area, one of the conservation areas recorded by Historic England. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings. The council can confirm if you’re not sure. About 40% of households in the area around Hampstead live in purpose-built flats, according to Census 2021. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.
If you live in a flat close to Finchley Road & Frognal station, the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. Near listed buildings like Institute of St Marcellina, less than half a mile north of the centre of Hampstead, older homes may keep original joinery that TV and media units can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent.

Is it time for TV and media units?
Equipment on the floor is another reason. A unit gives every box its own space, with air to keep it cool.
A few of the things people ask us to solve include:
- Space for a soundbar and speakers
- Bought furniture that doesn’t suit the room
- Equipment with nowhere proper to go
- A cabinet that traps heat
If your home is one of the older houses near St John-at-Hampstead church, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units.
