About our under-stairs storage in Dalston

Some under-stairs spaces are open enough for a small desk. We can build a desk with shelves above and a drawer or two below. Any new socket or light there is for your electrician, and we leave room and a route for the cable. It’s worth talking through at the measuring visit in Dalston. We make under-stairs cupboards from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are open space under the stairs that collects clutter and wanting a quiet corner for paperwork.

Most homes around Dalston are purpose-built flats, from mansion blocks to newer blocks. Older mansion block flats can have bays, long corridors and tall ceilings with space to use, while modern flats often have short halls and service boxing to work around. If you have a maisonette or duplex, the stairs can take storage too.

If the job needs another trade, like an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Materials and finishes

Spray-painted finish

A spray-painted finish works well on plain and panelled fronts. We do it in our workshop, where the finish can be kept even. The colour is your choice.

Doors and drawer fronts

We make the fronts from moisture-resistant MDF and finish them in the colour you choose. Their edges are cut to follow the angle of the stairs, so the gaps stay even all the way along.

Where other trades come in

It is useful to know what’s outside our work before you plan:

  • Any work on gas pipes or appliances
  • New sockets, lights or wiring, which are for your electrician
  • Moving a gas or electricity meter, which is arranged through your energy supplier

Not sure whether your space suits under-stairs storage? You can tell us about the room on our contact form and we will tell you before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

How fitting day works

Fitting day follows a set order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a block without a lift, every section goes up the stairs, so it’s sized to be manageable. The stair turns and landings set the limit. The pieces are assembled in the flat.

  1. First we hear what’s under your stairs now and what you need.
  2. At the design visit, the space is measured and any meters are noted, because they must stay accessible.
  3. The design is agreed and a written quote follows.
  4. Every part is made in our workshop, ready for a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
  5. We fit it in your home and check every drawer and door with you.

How to prepare

  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall

Making use of tricky spaces in Dalston

About 35% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Dalston went up before 1919, and about 24% between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. There are 97 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Dalston. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and under-stairs cupboards can be designed to work around them. Much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones run by the boroughs. For fitting in Dalston, a van normally needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. We ask about parking at the design visit, so the van can be planned for.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of St Mark, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. Close to Haggerston Park? Under-stairs cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. The wider area includes historic houses like Sutton House, about 0.9 miles east. If your own home is a period one, under-stairs cupboards are scribed to walls and stair strings that are rarely straight.

Flats, leases and landlords

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, unloading takes some planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so tell us about it during the design visit.

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, once we’ve measured the way in.

FAQs: under-stairs storage in Dalston

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Dalston?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.

How do you fit under-stairs storage in a flat in Dalston?

We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Under-stairs cupboards are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You do. We agree the colour with you before anything is painted.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room.

How do I get a quote?

Simply drop us a line using the contact form. It is useful to send rough sizes and a few pictures, and then we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design.

Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?

Walls and floors that aren’t true are part of the job in older homes. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth, so it sits tight to the room.

What it costs

There is no set price, because there is no set room. What affects it comes down to:

  • Parking near your home
  • The overall size of the piece
  • How square the room is
  • The number of doors and drawers

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, and that’s part of the price. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit.

What to send when you get in touch

When you contact us, these help most:

  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any

Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and go through the design with you, and the written quote comes after. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. To book a design visit, drop us a line using the contact form.
