How we make TV and media units for Pimlico

Speakers need their own thought. A soundbar typically sits just below the TV, and larger speakers can go on open shelves either side. Closing speakers in a cupboard muffles them. We make TV and media units from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about a big screen that dominates the wall and set-top boxes stacked on a stand.

Internal walls in newer homes are usually plasterboard on metal or timber studs, and the board won’t carry a heavy load on its own. Around Pimlico, where many homes were built since 2000, that shapes how TV and media units are fixed: heavier pieces stand on the floor and are fixed back into the studs, and shelves use fixings made for the board where there is no stud.

The quote comes in writing, so there’s time to read it properly. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

What happens on fitting day

Fitting day follows a set order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Newer blocks often have concierge desks, entry systems and rules on lift booking, so check them with the managing agent before fitting day. TV and media units are made in sections sized for the lift and doors.

  1. You contact us with a short note about the room and the unit you have in mind, including the size of the screen.
  2. We come to measure, note the sockets and agree the layout. New sockets or wiring are for your electrician, so it is useful to have them in mind early.
  3. You receive a written quote setting out the unit, materials and finish, ready for you to check.
  4. The unit is built in our workshop.
  5. We install the unit, leaving the cable routes and vents clear. We check the doors and shelves with you before we leave.

How to get a quote

Advice

What prompts TV and media units in Pimlico

Equipment on the floor is another reason. A unit gives every box its own space, with air to keep it cool, and keeps the floor clear.

Some of the things we’re asked to solve are these:

  • Set-top boxes stacked on a stand
  • Games, controllers and remotes everywhere
  • Cables trailing across the wall
  • Empty alcoves beside the TV

Close to Pimlico Gardens? Shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • How doors and drawers are fitted
  • Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
  • How they handle walls that aren’t straight

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

Honest limits

It is worth being clear about where our work stops:

  • Configuring the TV and sound system
  • Painting the walls and ceiling
  • Aerial, satellite or broadband installation

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can get in touch through our contact form and we will give you a straight answer. Our process from visit to fitting.

How we price TV and media units

The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. The main factors are:

  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • How big the furniture is

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size is the starting point. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

Getting in touch

You don’t need exact measurements or a plan. It’s enough to send:

  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth

To get a quote, get in touch through our contact form and tell us a little about the room and roughly what you’d like. We then arrange a design visit to measure and talk through the design, and a quote in writing follows.

FAQs: TV and media units in Pimlico

I live near London Victoria station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Westminster and the rest of London. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Will a conservation area stop me having TV and media units fitted in Pimlico?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. You do not need to watch us work.

Where should speakers go in a TV unit?

Speakers sound better in the open than shut in a cupboard. A shelf under the TV suits a soundbar. Bring the sizes to the design visit.

How do I get a quote for TV and media units in Pimlico?

The first step is to message us from the contact page and let us know about the room. After that, we arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

Will my boxes get too hot inside the unit?

We plan ventilation into the unit for boxes, consoles and amplifiers, with open backs, gaps or openings. Each box should have its own space, and it’s worth checking the maker’s guidance on clearances.

Is bespoke worth it?

A bespoke unit isn’t instant: there’s a design visit, a quote and making time. For a short stay, a standalone stand can make more sense. Large off-the-shelf pieces can make a small room feel smaller, whereas fitted pieces painted to suit the walls sit back into the space.

There is no price list, because each job is designed for a single room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote, with the materials and finish set out. To arrange a design visit, get in touch through our contact form.
