Walk-in wardrobes in West Green: what you get

You can have doors, open storage or a mix. Doors give a tidy, finished look and help keep dust away, and open rails make it quick to find things. The choice is yours, and we will go through it when we measure. If your home has turning a box room into a dressing room and storage for clothes that have outgrown the wardrobe, walk-in wardrobes made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand can solve it.

Sash windows are common in Victorian and Edwardian houses, and their position, along with any shutters, affects where furniture can go. For one of the older homes that make up a large share of the housing around West Green, we plan the layout so the window opens fully and the light still comes in. Doors are chosen and hung so they clear the bed, the radiator and the door to the room.

Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is built in our workshop. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

Is it time for walk-in wardrobes?

Some homes have a small room that never quite earns its keep. Fitted out as a walk-in wardrobe, it becomes part of everyday life than keeping a bed in it.

Here’s what walk-in wardrobes can help with:

  • Shelves for shoes and bags
  • Storage for clothes that have outgrown the wardrobe
  • Turning a box room into a dressing room
  • A side each for a couple

If your home is one of the older houses near St Philip the Apostle, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where walk-in wardrobes go.

What to check before you book

  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
  • How parking will work on your street

Your questions about walk-in wardrobes in West Green

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in West Green?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the design visit.

Can you fit walk-in wardrobes to the uneven walls of an older house in West Green?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

Can a box room become a walk-in wardrobe?

Often, yes. We can line a small room with hanging, shelving and drawers and still leave room to move. We will measure and plan it at the measuring visit.

How long will the walk-in wardrobe take to fit?

The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.

Should I send pictures?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough measurements. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.

What happens during the design visit?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. We’ll also ask about access and parking.

Could you do it yourself?

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it’s easy to buy.

Boards, parts and paint

Moisture-resistant MDF

Painted MDF doors look crisp and suit a calm, simple look.

Hand-painted finish

Some people like the character of a hand-painted finish in a period room.

Pricing walk-in wardrobes in West Green

There’s no set price, because there is no set room. The things that affect it are:

  • Parking near your home
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • The overall size of the piece

Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension near your home. It is useful to talk about parking during the design visit.

What we need to know

To give us a picture of the room, it helps to include:

  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on

Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a quote in writing. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. To book a design visit, get in touch through our contact form.

What happens on fitting day

You will not need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long the fitting takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Scribing is done on site, which means some cutting in the room or close by, so we ask for a clear space to work near the room. Dust is kept down and cleared up as we go. Hand painting, if that’s your finish, can follow the fitting.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about your clothes, shoes and bags and how you get ready.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and plan hanging lengths, shelves, drawers and shoe storage with you.
  3. You receive a written quote for the walk-in wardrobe.
  4. The units are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The walk-in wardrobe is fitted, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the inside fittings go in last.

Before we arrive

  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture

How to get a quote

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space, along with rough sizes. To share them, drop us a line using the contact form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.
