Fulham Window Seats

Thinking about window seats in Fulham? It starts with a design visit to measure and talk through ideas, then a written quote, before anything is made.

  • Looking for a reading spot by the window
  • Off-the-shelf pieces that never quite fit the window

What we don’t do

It’s useful to know what’s outside our work before you plan:

  • Electrical work around the seat
  • Fixing the window itself
  • Seat cushions, which you source separately

Not sure whether your space suits window seats? You can get in touch through our contact form and we’ll tell you. How a job runs, step by step.

How we make window seats for Fulham

Many windows have a radiator beneath them. A seat built over a radiator needs a grille or an open front, so the heat is not trapped. We design the grille into the front of the seat and leave space around the radiator. We will look at your radiator at the measuring visit in Fulham. We make window seats from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about nowhere to keep blankets, toys or books and wanting a seat without blocking the radiator.

With a large share of homes around Fulham built before 1919, under-stairs cupboards in older terraces often house the meters or the fuse board. Those have to stay reachable, so any storage is designed around them. Bays and sash windows in period houses are natural spots for a window seat.

You get the quote in writing, so you can read it at your own pace. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Fitting day, step by step

On the morning of the fitting, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. The sections built in our workshop come in next, one at a time. The time the fitting takes depends on whether the seat has drawers, a lift-up lid or a radiator grille, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Parking on terraced streets can be tight, especially in a controlled parking zone, so it’s useful to tell us at the measuring visit what’s outside. Unloading is kept short, with sections taken straight inside. Saturday fitting can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about the window, and whether a radiator sits beneath it.
  2. At the design visit we measure the window and the radiator, and plan a grille or open front so heat isn’t trapped.
  3. Your written quote sets out the seat, the grille, the materials and the finish.
  4. We make the seat and grille in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home and scribe it to the walls, with the finish sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.

Before fitting day

  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away

What affects the cost of window seats

A few things affect what fitted furniture costs:

  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • The internal fittings
  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We will talk through what you need inside at the measuring visit.

Before the design visit

Getting some details early makes the visit more useful. If you can, send:

  • Examples of the look you are after
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on

We quote once we have seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and go through the design with you, and the written quote comes after. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Bespoke window seats or ready-made?

Ready-made benches are made in fixed widths and depths. Bespoke seats are made to the size of the space, so nothing is wasted, and the storage below can be drawers, a lid or both. Ready-made pieces are proportioned for newer homes and can look lost in an older one, whereas fitted pieces can pick up the room’s height and mouldings.

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size comes first. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Materials and finishes

Spray-painted finish

Spray painting gives the seat a very even surface. It is applied in our workshop, so treat it gently while it cures fully.

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF can be cut cleanly, which suits the angled panels of a bay and the pattern of a grille. The grade we use is moisture-resistant and paints well. It forms most of the visible parts.

FAQs: window seats in Fulham

I live near West Brompton station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Hammersmith and Fulham and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

What is a window seat made from?

Our window seats are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then painted. A moisture-resistant grade suits a spot by a window, where condensation can form. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.

Who chooses the colour?

You choose it. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you have chosen.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two options: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.

Fulham homes and window seats

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Fulham were built before 1919 (about 67%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 13%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how window seats are fixed and fitted. Near the centre of Fulham, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Thomas of Canterbury (Grade II*), less than half a mile north, and Vine Cottages (Grade II), less than half a mile south-east. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, such as fixing into original panelling. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. About 26% of households in the streets around Fulham live in flats in converted or shared houses, based on Census 2021. In a converted house, rooms can be odd shapes, with new partitions meeting old walls, and the route in may go through a shared hall and stairs. A lease can require consent for alterations, so it is worth checking yours first.

For a flat near West Brompton station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. If your home is one of the older houses near St. Peter's Church, window seats can be scribed to follow a bay that’s rarely square. The wider area includes historic houses such as Fulham Palace, about 0.7 miles south-west. If your own home is a period one, the deep reveals of an older window can frame a seat neatly.
