How we make walk-in wardrobes for Hackney Marshes

With a walk-in wardrobe, clothes, shoes and bags have a space to themselves. It can be a spare room, a box room or part of a bedroom, with hanging rails, shelving and drawers planned around what you own. Everything is made in our workshop and fitted to the room, so it follows the walls and sits level. We make walk-in wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are setting aside a corner of a large bedroom and room for a growing wardrobe.

In a part of London with mixed housing, like much of the city, bedrooms can be anything from a box room to a big front room. Walk-in wardrobes can work in any of them, from a small spare room to a main bedroom. Every wall in Hackney Marshes homes is measured on site, because none is assumed to be square.

Everything we agree at the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If something is not quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot usually do that in an older room.

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Hand-painted finish

If you’d like the units to match the room’s woodwork, hand painting on site works well.

Shelves

Shelves suit folded clothes, bags and boxes. Each shelf is sized for its load.

What happens on fitting day

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving the room tidy. How long fitting takes depends on how much hanging, shelving and drawer space goes in, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand makes the day easier, including anything on the walls near the work. Floors and doorways are protected before anything comes in. Sections are then carried in and assembled.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the room and what you want to store. It could be a spare room, a box room or part of a bedroom.
  2. We visit, measure up and plan the layout with you, with shoe storage and a dressing table if you’d like them.
  3. A written quote follows, covering the design, materials and finish, for you to read through.
  4. Everything is made and finished in our workshop.
  5. The units are fitted in your home and trimmed to follow the walls.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Neither choice is right for every home. In a square room with a tight budget, a ready-made system may be enough. Where the room is awkward or you want it to feel built in, bespoke is usually the better fit. Ready-made furniture rarely suits a recess, a slope or an odd corner, and most homes have at least one. Built-in pieces are made to fit them.

Access to the room makes a difference too. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, and that is part of the price. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space.

FAQs: walk-in wardrobes in Hackney Marshes

Is parking a problem for fitting in Hackney Marshes?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

I live in a flat in Hackney Marshes. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps, which helps avoid condensation and mould. If there’s damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

What happens at the design visit?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and talk through the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and afterwards we send a written quote.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

Walls and floors that are not true are part of the job in older homes. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base.

How is the furniture painted?

You can choose between two finishes: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

Bedrooms in Hackney Marshes: local notes

About 33% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Hackney Marshes went up before 1919, and about 28% between 1973 and 1999, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). That matters for walk-in wardrobes, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Within a mile of the centre of Hackney Marshes, 5 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules. If your street in Hackney Marshes joins a main road, it is worth telling us during the design visit. Then we can work out where to load and unload.

The wider area includes historic houses such as Sutton House, about 1.1 miles south-west. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings give walk-in wardrobes room to reach the cornice. Living in a block of flats near Lea Bridge station? Then each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. If you live in a period home close to The Risen Christ and All Souls, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind walk-in wardrobes is part of the design.

What walk-in wardrobes cannot fix

Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work are not part of what we do. There are a few other points to bear in mind:

  • Electrical work in the room
  • Plastering, decorating or flooring
  • Fixing the cause of damp

If in doubt, you can message us from the contact page and describe the room. Our process from visit to fitting.
