Built-in bookshelves for homes in Hacton
We make built-in bookshelves from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF suits the panels and faces, while birch plywood is used where strength matters. The finish is spray painted in the workshop or hand painted, in the colour you choose. We work across London, including Hacton. If you’re living with shelving that frames a window and low shelves children can reach, that is what built-in bookshelves are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
Many houses from between the wars, and many semis, have been extended or opened up inside, and around Hacton, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a large share of the housing. In a long knocked-through room, built-in bookshelves can run the full length of one wall, or mark out the sitting end from the dining end. An extension’s plasterboard walls need different fixings from the original brick or block.
A quote in writing follows the design visit. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish.

From workshop to your room
You are welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving everything tidy. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.
- You get in touch and tell us what the shelves will carry, from paperbacks to records and ornaments.
- We visit to measure, check how the wall is built and plan the spans, because long shelves under heavy books need a thicker shelf, a lip or a support.
- Your written quote sets out the shelving and the finish.
- The bookcase is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with shelves stiffened where they span furthest.
- The bookshelves are fitted and fixed securely, with the finish sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand on site.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Keep pets in another room while we work
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
Getting a quote
If you know what you want, say so; if you do not, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, drop us a line using the contact form.

How we price built-in bookshelves
Not every room costs the same, for these reasons:
- How big the furniture is
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
- Doors and drawers, and how many
- Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, then set it out in the quote.
Getting in touch
The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. When you get in touch, it is useful to send:
- Examples of the look you’re after
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
- Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
- Rough sizes: width, height and depth
You do not need exact measurements to get started. We measure everything properly at the measuring visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To arrange it, message us from the contact page and tell us about the room. The written quote follows the visit.
Questions from Hacton
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Upminster station?
Yes, homes across Havering and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with a few details about the room.
Can you make built-in bookshelves for a home in Hacton?
Yes, Hacton is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Havering and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, and then we send a quote.
Should I send photos?
Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. Show anything the furniture has to work around, like radiators or sockets.
What if the wall is cold or damp?
External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.
How is the price worked out?
Every job is priced for its room: size, internal fittings, the finish and how awkward the walls are all play a part. The written quote follows the design visit.
Can my walls take a full bookcase?
That depends on how the wall is built. We fix bookshelves with fixings that suit the wall. If a wall isn’t suitable, we’ll tell you and suggest another approach.
Built-in bookshelves in Hacton: local notes
About 42% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Hacton went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 29% between 1973 and 1999, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That matters for built-in bookshelves, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. About 42% of homes in the streets around Hacton date from between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Houses from the 1920s and 1930s often have a bay window and a chimney breast in the front room, and built-in bookshelves are planned around both. Red routes are run by TfL, with tight limits on where and when vehicles can stop. Where a home in Hacton is on or beside a main road, it helps to mention that during the design visit. Then we can work out where to load and unload.
Close to Hornchurch Country Park? Built-in bookshelves can be arranged to keep the window and the light clear. For a flat near Upminster station, it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. If you live in a period home close to St Matthews Church Hall, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves.

What built-in bookshelves cannot fix
We are carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:
- Relocating radiators or pipework
- Painting walls and ceilings around the shelving
- Electrical work, like new sockets or switches, which is for your electrician
If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and we will give you a straight answer. Our process from visit to fitting.

What else we make in Hacton
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Many flat-pack shelves are thin and long, and they can sag under a full load. We size each shelf for its span and load. Off-the-shelf furniture comes in a few set depths, which may be too deep for one spot and too shallow for another. With fitted furniture, the depth is chosen for the room.
Tricky rooms take more time: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it, written once we have measured up.
What you get with us

Could you do it yourself?
Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s usually a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.
