Harlesden Walk-in Wardrobes

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make walk-in wardrobes for homes in Harlesden, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • Shelves for shoes and bags
  • Separate space for two people’s clothes
  • Long and double hanging planned around your clothes

Walk-in wardrobes in Harlesden: what you get

Hanging space is the heart of most walk-in wardrobes. Full-length hanging takes coats, dresses and long garments, while double hanging, one rail above another, fits shirts and jackets into half the height. The balance of long and double hanging is based on your clothes. We make walk-in wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and people most often get in touch about storage for clothes that have outgrown the wardrobe and setting aside a corner of a large bedroom.

Older bedrooms normally have generous ceiling heights, and a large share of the homes around Harlesden date from then. Fitted furniture can run right up to the ceiling or the cornice, with high storage for the things you use least. Picture rails, skirting boards and coving are met neatly or cut around.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

Bedrooms in Harlesden: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Harlesden were built before 1919 (about 52%) and since 2000 (about 32%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Within a mile of the centre of Harlesden, 4 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 24% of households in the neighbourhood around Harlesden, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. Conversions often leave rooms in unusual shapes, with partition walls, boxed-in pipes and chimney breasts in odd places, and the route in may go through a shared hall and stairs. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.

If you live in a flat close to Willesden Junction station, it’s useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. If you live near Roundwood Park, morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they will not shade the window.

Questions we’re often asked

How do you fit walk-in wardrobes in a flat in Harlesden?

We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Walk-in wardrobes are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It’s useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Will a conservation area stop me having walk-in wardrobes fitted in Harlesden?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

What happens at the measuring visit?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and discuss the design with you. We will also ask about access and parking.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

How are walk-in wardrobes priced?

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. The size of the room, the layout and the finish all make a difference. To arrange a design visit, message us from the contact page.

Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?

That’s normal in older homes, and it is what scribing is for. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.

What happens on fitting day

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Scribing is done on site, which means some cutting in the room or close by, so we ask for a clear space to work near the room. Dust is kept down and cleared up as we go. Where the finish is hand-painted, it can be done after the pieces are in.

  1. You get in touch with a few details about the room.
  2. The design visit covers measuring and the layout inside, planned around the way you get dressed.
  3. You receive a written quote.
  4. The units are built in our workshop.
  5. We fit everything in your home and check every door and drawer.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone

Getting a quote

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space. To send them over, drop us a line using the contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Advice

What prompts walk-in wardrobes in Harlesden

Others want a dressing table built in alongside the storage. We can design a dressing table into the room, close to the clothes and shoes.

Here’s what walk-in wardrobes can help with:

  • More space for clothes and shoes
  • A calmer, clearer bedroom
  • A dressing area in part of a bedroom
  • Room for two wardrobes in one space

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of All Souls, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • Whether you’ll get a written quote, not just a figure

How to choose a carpenter in London

Bespoke walk-in wardrobes or ready-made?

Off-the-shelf wardrobe systems are quicker to get and normally cost less, and in a square room they can work. Where walls lean and floors slope, they rarely fit neatly. Ours is built to the room’s real shape. Ready-made units stop well short of a tall period ceiling, wasting space that could hold things you rarely use. Built-in pieces can run to the cornice or the picture rail.

Tricky rooms take more time: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That’s reflected in the quote.

Why work with us in Harlesden

  • Built in our workshop and fitted in your home
  • Saturday visits and fitting by prior arrangement
  • A spray or hand-painted finish
  • Edges scribed to follow your walls

Read how bespoke compares with ready-made and what a quote should include.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths.

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it is easy to buy.

What affects the price in Harlesden

Several things affect the price:

  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • How big the furniture is

We don’t publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. Instead, we measure, discuss the design and then quote in writing. To arrange a design visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Getting in touch

A little information at the start saves time later. Where you can, include:

  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling

The quote is built from the design visit. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and talk through the design with you. Afterwards, we send a written quote for you to look over. To arrange the visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.
