Wall beds in Harlesden: what you get

Studio flats benefit more than most from a bed that folds away. During the day, the room is somewhere to sit, work and eat; at night, the bed comes down. We can build shelves, cupboards or a desk around the bed cabinet to make the most of the wall. If your home has a bed that looks like cupboards by day and a studio that works by day and night, wall beds made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed can solve it.

In streets where many homes were built before 1919, as they were around Harlesden, many bedrooms sit against solid brick external walls. Those walls can be colder than internal ones, so wardrobes and storage on them are designed with ventilation behind and inside to help avoid condensation. Smaller back bedrooms in houses of that age are good places for wall beds.

Everything we agree during the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

Harlesden homes and wall beds

Homes built before 1919 make up about 52% of the housing in the streets around Harlesden, with about 32% built since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. The National Heritage List records 6 entries within half a mile of the centre of Harlesden. Being near listed buildings does not make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. More than half of the homes in the neighbourhood around Harlesden (about 52%) were built before 1919, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Older houses can have lath-and-plaster internal walls and floors that slope, both of which matter when fixing a wall bed.

Living in a block of flats near Willesden Junction station? Then wall beds are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. If your home is one of the older houses near Church of All Souls, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

A normal bed has nothing to fix to the wall, and that has its appeal. But if the room has other jobs to do, a wall bed lets it do them every day. Standard units assume square rooms, and period homes seldom have them, so you end up with gaps, wobbles and units that do not meet the skirting. Fitted furniture is scribed to the wall instead.

How it is painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Common questions about wall beds

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Harlesden?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to let us know about parking during the design visit.

Is Harlesden in the area you cover for wall beds?

Yes, we work across Brent, Harlesden included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with a few details.

What if the stairs or lift are small?

Getting it in is planned at the measuring visit. The stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways are measured, and the furniture is made in sections sized to get through.

Are fold-down beds safe to use?

Safety depends on a secure fixing and sensible use. The mechanism is fixed exactly as its maker sets out; you lower it steadily with the floor clear.

Do I choose the paint colour?

The choice is yours. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.

Do you do the electrics?

No. We are carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design, and any new sockets are best done before fitting day.

Fitting day, step by step

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it is going into, and fitting day is where that happens. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On fitting day, edges are trimmed on site to follow the walls, so a clear area to work in near the room helps. We keep dust down and tidy as we go. Where the finish is hand-painted, it can be done after the pieces are in.

  1. You contact us about a wall bed for a spare room or studio.
  2. We visit to measure the room and the way in, from the front door to the room itself. Mention parking as well, since vans often need a permit or a paid bay.
  3. We send a written quote.
  4. In our workshop we build the bed cabinet in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We carry the sections in, assemble them and fix the mechanism as its maker specifies, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area

Advice

Flats, conversions and lettings

If the property is let, we will need access agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. An agent can arrange access for you.

Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. We choose fixings to suit the wall.

How we price wall beds

The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. That depends on:

  • The internal fittings
  • How square the room is
  • Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • How big the furniture is

Every room is priced on its own, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. You’ll see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

What we need to know

To help us picture the room, please include:

  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, when we’ve measured up and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.

Is it time for wall beds?

Working from home has changed how many spare rooms are used. People want a desk by day and a bed for visitors, and a fold-down bed lets it do both.

Here are some of the needs we are asked about most:

  • A spare room that’s rarely slept in
  • Hiding the bed when it is not in use
  • Shelves or a desk around the bed
  • A home office that also sleeps guests

For a family home near John Keble CofE Primary School, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller.

What to check before you book

  • Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
  • How doors and drawers are fitted
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • Will the quote be in writing?
