Walk-in wardrobes in Manor House

You do not need a spare room to have a walk-in wardrobe. Where a bedroom is large enough, a section can be set aside with a partition or a run of units, either open to the room or behind doors. Any new partition wall is for your builder, while we make and fit the furniture. If your home has a walk-in wardrobe within the bedroom and room for two wardrobes in one space, that is what walk-in wardrobes are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Ceilings in homes built before 1919 are often tall, and a large share of homes around Manor House are that old. That height can be used, with fitted furniture taken up to the cornice and top cupboards for occasional things. Original mouldings are worked around rather than removed.

A written quote follows the design visit. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish, so it is clear what’s included.

What happens on fitting day

You are welcome to ask questions while we work. Most of the decisions were made during the design visit and set out in your quote, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving everything tidy. The time the fitting takes depends on how much hanging, shelving and drawer space goes in, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Hallways in period houses are often narrow, and the stairs turn sharply, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route in. Floors and stair carpets are protected on the way in and out.

  1. To begin, use our contact form; a brief note on the room and what it needs to store is plenty.
  2. We visit to measure up and work out the layout inside, including any dressing table.
  3. You receive a written quote for the walk-in wardrobe.
  4. The units are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The walk-in wardrobe is fitted, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the inside fittings go in last.

How to prepare

  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going

Is bespoke worth it?

A bespoke walk-in wardrobe takes more planning than buying a system, and it costs more. What you get is storage designed for what you own and the space you have. The two recesses beside a chimney breast are seldom an identical size, which means a matching pair of ready-made units seldom fits both. Fitted furniture is made to each one separately.

Access to the room makes a difference too. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, and that is part of the price. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit.

What you get with us

  • Built around your room
  • Finished by spray or by hand
  • Saturdays by arrangement
  • Scribed to uneven walls

Read bespoke vs off-the-shelf and how to compare quotes.

What affects the cost of walk-in wardrobes

We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. This is what makes the difference:

  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • Spray painting or hand painting

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size is the starting point. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Helping us understand the room

Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:

  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around

The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and go through the design with you. A written quote follows the visit, so you can take your time with it. To arrange the visit, message us from the contact page.

Walk-in wardrobes for homes in Manor House

In the streets around Manor House, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 54%) and the years since 2000 (about 18%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Manor House include Engine House of Metropolitan Water Board (Grade II*), about 0.5 miles south, and Church of St Olave (Grade II), under half a mile east. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, may need listed building consent. It is worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. Parking on many inner London streets is controlled, with zones run by each borough. A van working in Manor House will typically need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension arranged through the council, which often needs notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.

If you live in a flat close to Harringay Green Lanes station, walk-in wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. The wider area includes historic houses like Bruce Castle, about 2.1 miles north-east. For a period home anywhere nearby, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind walk-in wardrobes is part of the design. If your children go to Woodberry Down Community Primary School or a school nearby, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else.

Manor House is part of the London Borough of Hackney, about 3 miles south of Shoreditch. Manor House is part of the area we cover, and the process is the same everywhere we work. Manor House is one of 20 places on our list for Hackney.

Questions from Manor House

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Manor House?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

Can you make walk-in wardrobes for a home in Manor House?

Yes, Manor House is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Hackney and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

My walls are not straight. Is that a problem?

Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.

Does my lease affect fitted furniture?

Possibly. A lease can require consent for alterations. We cannot advise on leases, so please check yours.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, and furniture inside a house does not normally need it. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.

Is it better to have doors or open storage?

That depends on how you like to use the space. We can fit doors, open storage or both, and we will talk it through at the measuring visit.

What we do not do

We’d rather be clear about where our work stops:

  • Lighting and wiring, which are for your electrician
  • Fixing the cause of damp
  • Advice on your lease

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can fill in our short enquiry form and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How it works.
