Walk-in Wardrobes in Mildmay

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make walk-in wardrobes for homes in Mildmay, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • Separate space for two people’s clothes
  • A built-in dressing table
  • Hanging for coats, dresses and shirts

Before and after fitting day

New paint needs time to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. Beyond that, these tips help:

  • Keep the room ventilated
  • Measure how much long hanging you need
  • Decide on doors or open storage before we measure
  • Deal with any damp walls first

Once the units are fitted, the paint needs time to cure fully. Treat the doors and drawer fronts gently at first, and wipe them with a soft, damp cloth.

It’s useful to know what you’ll keep before we measure. We plan the layout around your clothes, so it’s worth having a sort-out first.

Good light helps you see colours and find things. Wiring for new lights is a job for your electrician. We plan the units with your electrician’s work in mind and agree the details when we measure. If your home has somewhere to sit and get ready and the right mix of long and short hanging, that is what walk-in wardrobes are for, made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Older bedrooms normally have generous ceiling heights, and a large share of homes around Mildmay are that old. Fitted furniture can run right up to the ceiling or the cornice, with high storage for the things you use least. Picture rails, skirting boards and coving are met neatly or cut around.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Mildmay homes and walk-in wardrobes

About 48% of the homes in the area around Mildmay went up before 1919, and about 22% between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Part of Mildmay is in a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If you’re unsure, check with the council before work starts. Red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping and loading. Where a home in Mildmay is on or beside a main road, it’s useful to mention that during the design visit. We’ll plan where the van can stop.

Close to Highbury Fields? Keeping walk-in wardrobes off the window wall keeps the room bright. Living in a block of flats near Dalston Kingsland station? Then check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St Matthias, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Common questions about walk-in wardrobes

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Mildmay?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the design visit.

I live in a flat in Mildmay. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Should I send photos?

Yes, they help. Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space. To send them, message us from the contact page.

What happens at the measuring visit?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and discuss the design with you. We will also ask about access and parking.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need someone to let us in at the start of the day. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?

It’s something we deal with all the time. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base.

How fitting works for walk-in wardrobes

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and fitting day is where that happens. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Where a period house has been split into flats, the way in often goes through shared parts, so it is useful to let neighbours know about fitting day. Each section is sized for the tightest door or turn. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. It starts with a short note from you.
  2. We come to measure and go through the design.
  3. A quote in writing follows.
  4. We make the walk-in wardrobe in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the units and trim the edges to meet the walls and ceiling.
  6. Before we leave we go through the doors and drawers with you; new paintwork needs gentle handling while it cures.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture

Starting with a design visit

You don’t need exact measurements to get started. We measure everything properly at the design visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To get started, tell us about the room on our contact form and let us know about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

If the property is let, we’ll need access agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf.

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the design visit.

Honest limits

We design, make and fit the furniture. That means:

  • Electrical work in the room
  • Fixing the cause of damp
  • Building a new partition wall

If in doubt, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and describe the room. How it works.
