About our walk-in wardrobes in Nunhead

Our walk-in wardrobes are made for homes in Nunhead and all over London. We begin with a design visit, measuring the room and talking through the design, then a quote in writing. Once agreed, we make the units in our workshop and fit them in your home. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. If you’re living with somewhere to sit and get ready and the right mix of long and short hanging, that’s what walk-in wardrobes are for, made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Ceilings in homes built before 1919 are often tall, and a large share of homes around Nunhead are that old. That height can be used, with fitted furniture taken up to the cornice and top cupboards for occasional things. Original mouldings are worked around rather than removed.

If the job needs another trade, like an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

How fitting day works

At the end, we tidy up and lift the floor protection. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you. How long fitting takes depends on how much hanging, shelving and drawer space goes in, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. On fitting day, edges are trimmed on site to follow the walls, so we ask for a clear space to work near the room. Dust is kept down and cleared up as we go. Where the finish is hand-painted, it can be done after the pieces are in.

  1. You get in touch with a few details about the room.
  2. The design visit covers measuring and the layout inside.
  3. A written quote is sent to you.
  4. Everything is made at our workshop.
  5. We fit everything in your home and check every door and drawer. Each unit is set level and scribed to the walls.

Before fitting day

  • Empty the space we’ll be working in
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall

Getting a quote

Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and discuss the design with you, then send a quote in writing. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. To arrange a visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Bespoke walk-in wardrobes or ready-made?

Fitted storage stays with the house when you move. It’s worth thinking about how long you plan to stay before you decide. Recesses in older houses come in every size except the standard ones, so ready-made units rarely fill them properly. Made for the space, the furniture uses the full width and height.

Rooms that aren’t square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. That is reflected in the quote.

What you get with us

  • Made for your room, not a standard size

Caring for painted furniture

A little care keeps the finish looking good, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. Here are our suggestions:

  • Have a clear-out before we measure
  • Keep the room ventilated
  • Give the paint time to cure fully
  • Count your coats and long garments

If a hand-painted door gets a knock, it can be touched in. A spray finish gives a smooth surface that wipes clean.

Deal with any damp before the units go in. Cooler external walls can lead to condensation, and ventilation inside the units helps.

Pricing walk-in wardrobes in Nunhead

What you pay depends on:

  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • How many doors and drawers there are

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design.

What we need to know

When you contact us, these help most:

  • Examples of the look you’re after
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • Your postcode and the borough

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, particularly with rough measurements. To share them, send us a few details through our contact form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.

Questions from Nunhead

Does a conservation area in or near Nunhead affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Can you fit walk-in wardrobes to the uneven walls of an older house in Nunhead?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

Can you put a walk-in wardrobe in part of a bedroom?

Yes, if there’s enough space. One end or a corner can be set aside with a run of units, with doors or left open. Any new partition is for your builder, and we fit the furniture.

Do I need doors on a walk-in wardrobe?

That depends on how you like to use the space. Doors, open rails and shelves can all be combined, and we go through the options when we measure.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

It needs a little planning: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We don’t treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.

Flats, conversions and lettings

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Let us know about it when you contact us.

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways along with the room itself, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.

Living in a block of flats near Nunhead station? Then walk-in wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.
