Walk-in wardrobes in Lambeth
Walk-in wardrobes for homes in Lambeth
A walk-in wardrobe needs air moving through it, particularly where it sits against a cooler external wall. Moving air helps keep clothes fresh and stops damp building up, and we design the units to allow for it. If you are living with shelves for shoes and bags and hanging for coats, dresses and shirts, walk-in wardrobes made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand can solve it.
Many homes around Lambeth were built since 2000, and a newer bedroom seldom comes with storage that fits how you live. We design walk-in wardrobes around the window, the radiator and the door, so the room still works. Where the flat is in a managed block, check the rules on deliveries and lifts before fitting day.
Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Bedrooms in Lambeth: local notes
Homes built since 2000 make up about 36% of the housing in the streets around Lambeth, with about 21% built before 1919, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That matters for walk-in wardrobes, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. 30 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of central Lambeth. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Strict stopping rules apply on red routes, which TfL runs. If you live on or close to a main road in Lambeth, let us know at the design visit. We’ll plan where the van can stop.
If you live in a period home close to St Peter's Church, tall ceilings give walk-in wardrobes room to reach the cornice. Close to Old Paradise Gardens? Keeping walk-in wardrobes off the window wall keeps the room bright. Near listed buildings like Woodstock Court, less than half a mile east of the centre of Lambeth, older homes may keep original joinery that walk-in wardrobes can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent.
Lambeth is about 2 miles south of Stockwell, within the London Borough of Lambeth. We can visit homes in Lambeth on weekdays, or on a Saturday by prior arrangement. Our work takes in places right across the rest of London, from the busiest high streets to quiet residential roads.
In SE11, SW1P and SW8, the process is the same as anywhere else in London. Whether you live on a street like Gibson Road, Langley Lane and Randall Road or on one nearby, we can visit to measure up for walk-in wardrobes. The A3203 and A3204 runs close to Lambeth, so if your home is on a main road, mention it when you get in touch. If you are just outside Lambeth, we also cover Vauxhall (1 mile north), Kennington (1 mile south), Oval (1 mile south), Newington Butts (1 mile east) and St George's Fields (1 mile north-east). Across the rest of the rest of London, our area takes in Stockwell (2 miles south), Streatham (4 miles south), West Norwood (4 miles south), Clapham (2 miles south-west), Brixton (2 miles south) and Loughborough Junction (2 miles south-east).

Flats, conversions and leaseholders
Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Tell us about them at the design visit, and we’ll plan the fitting around them.
If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways not just the room, so each section is sized to get through.
Boards, parts and paint
Hand-painted finish
Hand painting in the room lets the units match the doors and skirting.
Birch plywood
Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which suits drawer boxes and shelves. Its layered edge can be shown or painted.
Before and after fitting day
New paint needs time to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. Beyond that, these tips help:
- Consider a mix of doors and open shelves
- Measure how much long hanging you need
- Give the paint time to cure fully
- Sort through your clothes before the design visit
Store heavy things on lower shelves, and do not overload a single rail. It helps the shelves and rails stay straight.
Before the design visit, sort through your clothes. We plan the layout around your clothes, so it’s worth having a sort-out first.
FAQs: walk-in wardrobes in Lambeth
Will a conservation area stop me having walk-in wardrobes fitted in Lambeth?
Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Is parking a problem for fitting in Lambeth?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the design visit.
What if my walls and floors are out of level?
Walls and floors that are not true are part of the job in older homes. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth, so it sits tight to the room.
Is it better to have doors or open storage?
Either works. Doors keep dust off and give a calm, finished look, and open storage makes things quick to find. A mix of the two is common.
What does a walk-in wardrobe cost?
We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. The size of the room, the layout and the finish all make a difference. To arrange a design visit, use our contact form.
What happens at the design visit?
We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. We’ll also ask about access and parking, and afterwards we send a quote in writing.
From workshop to your room
Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it looks as though it was always there. How long the fitting takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Before fixing into a stud wall, we check for pipes and cables, and heavy pieces are fixed into the studs or stand on the floor. Any new sockets or plumbing are for your electrician or plumber, ideally before fitting day.
- You contact us about a walk-in wardrobe or dressing room.
- At the design visit we agree the layout and check how the units will reach the room.
- We send a written quote.
- Everything is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections that fit the route in.
- The units are brought in, assembled and set level. The finish is sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.
How to prepare
- Empty the space we will be working in
- Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
How to get a quote
Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space, along with rough measurements. To send them over, tell us about the room on our contact form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.
Related advice
What it costs
What you pay depends on:
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
- The number of doors and drawers
- Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size is the starting point. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.
What to send when you contact us
Here’s what helps us most when you get in touch:
- Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
- Where you live, with the postcode
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, when we have measured up and talked through the design. For a quote, get in touch through our contact form.
