Walk-in wardrobes in Wandsworth

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make walk-in wardrobes for homes in Wandsworth, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • A built-in dressing table
  • Hanging for coats, dresses and shirts
  • Storage for clothes that have outgrown the wardrobe

What we don’t do

Some parts of a job need another trade, like an electrician, a plumber or a Gas Safe engineer. Here is what to bear in mind:

  • Fixing the cause of damp
  • Structural changes or removing walls
  • Lighting and wiring, which are for your electrician

How we make walk-in wardrobes for Wandsworth

Drawers, shelves and shoe storage make a walk-in wardrobe work day to day. Folded knitwear sits well on shelves, smaller things go in drawers and shoes can have racks or shelves of their own. If the room allows, we can include a dressing table. Typical reasons to get in touch are somewhere for shoes to live and separate space for two people’s clothes, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

In streets where many homes were built before 1919, as they were around Wandsworth, many bedrooms sit against solid brick external walls. Cold external walls can lead to condensation, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture is part of the design. Small back bedrooms and box rooms are common too, and they suit walk-in wardrobes and other fitted storage well.

The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the walk-in wardrobe we’ve designed for the room, its materials and its finish, and it’s what the workshop builds to.

Bespoke walk-in wardrobes or ready-made?

Choosing bespoke means a design visit, a quote, workshop time and fitting, as well as a bigger outlay. What you get is storage designed for what you own and the space you have. Off-the-shelf furniture is made for flat walls and level floors, which older houses rarely have, so it leaves gaps at the wall, tilts on sloping floors or sits awkwardly against skirting and picture rails. Fitted pieces follow the wall and sit level.

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Why choose us

  • Fitted tight to walls that aren’t straight
  • Saturdays by prior arrangement
  • We visit, measure and talk through the design before we quote
  • Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood

Bedrooms in Wandsworth: local notes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 49% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Wandsworth, with about 27% built since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. 8 conservation areas have at least part of their area less than a mile from the middle of Wandsworth. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. In inner London, a large part of the street parking sits inside borough-run controlled parking zones. That normally means a van in Wandsworth needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council. It is useful to let us know about parking at the design visit.

If you live in a period home close to St Anne's Church, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind walk-in wardrobes is part of the design. For a family home near St Anne's CofE Primary School, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller. Living in a block of flats near Wandsworth Town station? Then the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it.

Wandsworth is about 1 mile north-east of Clapham Junction, in the London Borough of Wandsworth. From period terraces to newer flats in Wandsworth, the furniture is designed around the room as we find it. Our work takes in places right across the rest of London, from the busiest high streets to quiet residential roads.

Every home in SW18, SW15 and SW11 is within our area for walk-in wardrobes, from the main roads to the quieter streets. We cover homes on streets such as Alma Road, Marl Road and Knoll Road, along with the roads around them, whether you want walk-in wardrobes or another piece made for the room. If you’re just outside Wandsworth, we also cover Southfields (1 mile south), Earlsfield (1 mile south), Hurlingham (1 mile north), Clapham Junction (1 mile north-east) and Battersea (1 mile north-east). We also make walk-in wardrobes in nearby places such as Tooting (2 miles south-east), Tooting Bec (2 miles south-east), Balham (2 miles south-east), Furzedown (3 miles south-east), Streatham Park (3 miles south-east) and Roehampton (2 miles west).

Practical tips

People planning walk-in wardrobes often ask about these. They help before and after fitting:

  • Measure how much long hanging you need
  • Consider a mix of doors and open shelves
  • Keep the room ventilated
  • Count your shoes before the design visit

If a hand-painted door gets a knock, it can be touched in. A spray finish gives a smooth surface that wipes clean.

Deal with any damp before the units go in. External walls can be colder and damper, and ventilation inside the units helps.

Questions from Wandsworth

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Wandsworth?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.

My home in Wandsworth is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Walk-in wardrobes are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

How are walk-in wardrobes priced?

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. The size of the room, the layout and the finish all make a difference. For a design visit, message us from the contact page.

Does a walk-in wardrobe need air flow?

Yes, it helps keep clothes fresh and damp away. The design allows air to circulate, and any damp on the walls should be sorted before fitting.

How long will the walk-in wardrobe take to fit?

How long fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We will talk it through at the measuring visit.

What happens when you come to measure?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and a written quote follows.

Fitting day, step by step

Fitting day follows a set order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Where a period house has been split into flats, the way in often goes through shared parts, so neighbours may appreciate a note before fitting day. The sections are sized for the narrowest point on the route. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. First, you tell us about the space and how you dress.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and talk through hanging, shelves and drawers, with shoe storage and a dressing table if you’d like them.
  3. We send a quote that sets out the layout, materials and finish.
  4. Everything is made and finished in our workshop.
  5. We fit the walk-in wardrobe in your home, scribed to the walls and set level.

Before we arrive

  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
