What it’s made from

Birch plywood

We use birch plywood where strength matters, which suits parts that carry load. The edge can be left on show or painted.

Shelves

Shelf spans and depths are sized so they do not sag.

Wall beds in Shepherd's Bush: what you get

Many people now work from home in a room that also has to sleep guests. A wall bed with a desk or shelves beside it lets the room do both, so the bed does not dominate the working day. We can allow for cables to the desk, while new sockets are for your electrician. If your home has storage built around a fold-down bed and a bed that looks like cupboards by day, that is what wall beds are for, made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Around Shepherd's Bush, a large share of homes date from before 1919, and bedrooms in houses of that age often have a chimney breast with an alcove either side. Fitted furniture can fill the alcoves, wrap round the chimney breast or run across a whole wall. Because older floors slope and walls bow, everything is scribed and levelled on site.

The quote comes in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and talk it over at home. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Bedroom storage in Shepherd's Bush

About 67% of the homes in the area around Shepherd's Bush went up before 1919, and about 14% between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for wall beds, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Part of Shepherd's Bush is in a conservation area, according to Historic England’s records. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. In inner London, a large part of the street parking sits inside borough-run controlled parking zones. For fitting in Shepherd's Bush, a van typically needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Parking is worth mentioning at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.

For a flat near Shepherds Bush station, the route in is measured along with the room itself, and the sections are sized to fit it. If your children go to Addison Primary School or a school nearby, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller.

Pricing wall beds in Shepherd's Bush

To work out the quote, we look at:

  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • Parking near your home
  • Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors

We do not publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. Instead, we measure, go through the design and then quote in writing, naming the materials and finish. To start, get in touch through our contact form.

Before the design visit

Getting a few details early makes the visit more useful. If you can, send:

  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any

To get a quote, tell us about the room on our contact form and tell us a little about the room and roughly what you’d like. We then arrange a design visit to measure and discuss the design, and send you a written quote afterwards.

Honest limits

We do not treat damp or carry out building work, and there are a few other limits too:

  • Advice on your lease
  • Making good the walls after other work
  • Structural work to the wall or floor

Not sure whether your space suits wall beds? You can get in touch through our contact form and we will tell you before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

The problems wall beds solve

Most people come to us with a guest room that sits empty most of the year. A standard bed takes up the floor all the time, and a wall bed lets the room be used every day.

Requests we hear often include:

  • A studio that works by day and night
  • Somewhere comfortable for guests to sleep
  • A guest bed that disappears in the day
  • Shelves or a desk around the bed

Leighton House, about 0.9 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where wall beds go.

Before you choose who makes it

  • How they handle walls that are not straight
  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • Real projects you can actually look at
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked

Questions we are often asked

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

I live in a flat in Shepherd's Bush. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

Walls and floors that aren’t true are part of the job in older homes. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base, so there are no gaps at the sides.

Is a wall bed safe for everyday use?

Wall beds are made for regular use when fixed and used as its maker specifies. We fix the mechanism securely to a sound wall or floor, and the maker’s guidance on use should always be followed.

Can I send photos before the visit?

Yes, they help. Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, particularly with rough sizes. You can send them when you get in touch through our contact form.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

We need someone to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

From workshop to your room

The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. On fitting day in an older house, the main job is scribing to walls and levelling on floors that slope, so there’s some trimming and adjusting on site. We protect the floors and keep dust to a minimum. It is useful to let us know about parking during the design visit, as terraced streets are often busy.

  1. You tell us about the room.
  2. At the design visit we agree the layout and the colour.
  3. You receive a quote in writing covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. The cabinets are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood; a spray finish is applied there for a smooth, even surface.
  5. The wall bed is fitted, and any hand painting is done on site. New paint needs gentle use while it cures.

Preparing the room

  • Tell us about parking near your home
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
