Common questions about wall beds

Do you cover homes near Gidea Park station?

Yes, homes across Havering and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Gidea Park?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It is useful to tell us about parking at the measuring visit.

Do you move sockets or add lighting?

No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.

Do I need permission to fit furniture in a leasehold flat?

Possibly. Some leases need the building owner’s consent before you make alterations, including fixing furniture to the walls. Check your lease, as we cannot advise on it.

Can I send pictures before the visit?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. To send them, message us from the contact page.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.

How we make wall beds for Gidea Park

Not every mattress suits every wall bed; the mechanism maker sets the size, depth and weight it can take. We can go through what the mechanism allows when we measure, so the mattress you choose fits. If you are living with room for a desk and a guest bed and a proper bed instead of a sofa bed, that’s what wall beds are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

The front bedroom in many 1920s and 1930s houses sits above a bay, which leaves the side walls for storage and the bay for light. Around Gidea Park, a big part of the housing is interwar, semi-detached or detached, so that shape of room is worth knowing. Every wall is measured, as a room that looks square rarely is.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

Flats, conversions and lettings

If the property is let, we will need access agreed with the tenants. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Tell us about them during the design visit, so fitting day is planned around them.

What affects the cost of wall beds

Prices vary from room to room, and it comes down to:

  • How big the furniture is
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room

How it is painted is part of the price: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

What to send when you contact us

When you contact us, these help most:

  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any

You don’t need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To get started, get in touch through our contact form. The written quote follows the visit.

From workshop to your room

Fitting day follows a set order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Interwar houses normally have a straight run of stairs and a reasonable hallway, though we still measure the route in along with the room itself. The furniture comes in sections and is put together where it’s going, with floors protected throughout.

  1. We start with how the room is used and who’ll sleep there.
  2. We visit to measure up and look at what the wall is made of, as the bed must be fixed securely.
  3. A quote follows, setting out the design and finish.
  4. We build and finish everything in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home, with the mechanism fixed as its maker specifies.

How to prepare

  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician ahead of time

Starting with a design visit

If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, use our contact form.

Advice

Is bespoke worth it?

A sofa bed is cheaper and simpler, and for occasional guests that may be enough. With a wall bed you get a proper bed and an empty floor by day, which can make a small room usable. Doors, windows and radiators rarely leave a gap that matches a standard width, which leaves ready-made pieces sitting awkwardly. Built-in pieces are planned around those fixed points.

Rooms that aren’t square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That’s reflected in the quote, which we write after seeing the room.

What you get with us

  • Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
  • Workshop-made and fitted by us
  • A spray or hand-painted finish
  • We visit, measure and talk through the design before we quote

Flat-pack or bespoke?

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

Gidea Park homes and wall beds

About 40% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Gidea Park went up between 1945 and 1972, and about 34% between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for wall beds, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. The National Heritage List records 10 entries within half a mile of the centre of Gidea Park. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. About 49% of households in the area around Gidea Park live in detached or semi-detached houses, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. A house like that typically has more rooms to plan around than a flat, and sometimes a driveway that makes unloading easier.

For a family home near Royal Liberty School, the inside of wall beds can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow. Near listed buildings like The Royal Liberty School, about 0.6 miles south-east of the centre of Gidea Park, older homes may keep original joinery that wall beds can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. Hare Hall, about 0.6 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where wall beds go.
