Wall beds for homes in London Docklands

The mattress has to suit the mechanism, because the mechanism maker sets limits on size, depth and weight. We can go through what the mechanism allows when we measure, so you can choose a mattress that works. If you are living with more floor space in a studio flat and a spare room that’s rarely slept in, wall beds made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.

A large share of the homes around London Docklands date from 2000 onwards, and newer homes rarely have enough built-in storage for a bedroom. Wall beds can be designed around the window, the radiator and the door swing. Where the flat is in a managed block, check the rules on deliveries and lifts before fitting day.

Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made in our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

A bespoke wall bed takes more planning than buying a unit online. What you get is one design that suits the room and the way you use it. Ready-made units fixed to stud walls are often held by fixings that don’t suit the board. Built-in pieces are designed with the right fixings from the start, and heavy pieces can stand on the floor.

Parking is part of the price picture in London. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension near your home. Tell us about parking at the design visit, so it can be planned.

What you get with us

  • Designed for the room you have
  • Finished by spray or by hand
  • Saturdays by arrangement
  • Made in moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood

From workshop to your room

At the end, we tidy up and take up the floor coverings. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and answer any questions. How long the fitting takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Newer homes often have finished floors, painted walls and new doors that mark easily, so everything on the way in is covered before the sections arrive. Corners and door frames are covered as well. Once inside, the pieces are joined in place.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about the room and how often the bed is used.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room, look at the wall and talk through the design.
  3. A quote in writing follows, covering the cabinet, the storage and the finish.
  4. The cabinets are built in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The bed and cabinets are fitted in your home and the mechanism fixed securely. The finish is sprayed in our workshop or painted by hand on site.

Before we arrive

  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Keep pets in another room while we work

Bedrooms in London Docklands: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around London Docklands were built since 2000 (about 70%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 14%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. The centre of London Docklands is within about a quarter of a mile of the St Matthias' Church Conservation Area. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Your council can advise if you’re unsure. Since the zone was extended to the outer boroughs in August 2023, the whole of London has been inside the ULEZ. It applies to every van that comes to fit furniture in London Docklands. Access and parking are talked through at the measuring visit.

For a flat near Canary Wharf station, wall beds are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. For families living near Tower Hamlets College, the inside of wall beds can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow. If you live near Sir John McDougall Gardens, morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they will not shade the window.

Flats, leases and landlords

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways as well as the room, so each section is sized to get through.

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, after measuring the route at the design visit.

What affects the price in London Docklands

What you pay depends on:

  • The width and height of the space
  • How square the room is
  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Getting in touch

Getting a few details early makes the visit more useful. Where you can, include:

  • Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling

To make a start, message us from the contact page and let us know which room you have in mind and roughly what you’d like. We then arrange a design visit to measure and go through the design, and a quote in writing follows.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

It is worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

FAQs: wall beds in London Docklands

Is parking a problem for fitting in London Docklands?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to tell us about parking at the measuring visit.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Canary Wharf station?

Yes. We cover all of Tower Hamlets and the rest of London. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?

Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.

How much time does fitting need?

How long the fitting takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote.

Does my lease affect fitted furniture?

Possibly. Some leases need the building owner’s consent before you make alterations, including fixing furniture to the walls. Check your lease, as we cannot advise on it.

Should I send pictures?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.
